Besides this, luck is going to be the biggest issue. IIRC, the first time I did this, I had something like Magic Wand, Garlic, King Bible, Peachone, Ebony Wings, Runetracer, Thunder Ring (yes, that is 7, but the birds will combine), Pummarola, Armour, Duplicator, Spellbinder, Crown, Candelabrador, Empty Tome (again, yes that is 7, but there is an tome lying on the ground to the left of the start, if you grab this after you fill up all of your passive slots then you can hold 7). The wand may have given it away, but this was a run with Imelda.
Every stage has two items on the ground, which means you're allowed some leeway with weapon RNG, and this also factor into the strategy. For instance if you play Arca you might wanna start in the Mad Forest for the guaranteed Spinach.
