Also as you unlock more stuff you'll find that garlic really isn't the best weapon. It certainly does feel like that now, but eventually you'll find something that works better for longer.
Level it up to at least level 5 and it won't delete everything. Better yet, max it out so it won't delete any loot at all.
Another "X weapon is a n00b trap yokel".
Just because you don't like a particular weapon it doesn't mean everyone else does too. Case in point, I feel the birds suck as a starting weapon which is why ExDash and Toastie are quite the pain to start with. Smith IV isn't that too painful to start with though as Vandelier is indeed stronger than Ebony Wings or Peachone.
As with any weapon though, they can be made to work really well, garlic is good as an extra layer of defense since it slows down enemies and makes them more vulnerable to knockback, this can help keep you safe if you have other weapons that can use that to their advantage (like bible). The evolved form gives you healing too, which is always a plus.
Penta is a straight up crowd clearer with a huge downside, but that downside can be reduced as you improve your luck and upgrade the pentagram, plus its' evolved form is really good. It's also useful in situations like the OP had. If you can get pentagram early on and get to the coffin, you could use it to wipe away the mobs. Pentagram shouldn't delete the coffin, and it shouldn't delete the weapons/passives that spawn in the levels, just xp, chests, and drops from breakables.
That's not even getting into arcanas or limit breaking.
As far as I'm concerned, all the weapons are good, just depends on how you build them and how lucky you are, and even that becomes less of an issue the further in the game you go, never underestimate just how overpowered you can get.
