Difficulty unlocking the secret character "Toastie"

I followed for hours the instructions for unlocking Toastie.
1. playing i.e. Dairy Plant (Map) (Hurry) (Arcane)
2. and waiting for the Reaper to spawn (with a certain %)
3. and after killing him (Pentagram)
4. and after the pop up on the bottom right on my screen
5. pressing down (arrow) and Enter button at the same time repeatedly.

I did this several times and it does not work.
And now i do not even get the pop up on the bottom right anymore.

I play with a controller and keeping my hands ready on the keyboard for the input.
Can anyone maybe help me out? Or give a useful tip?

Toastie can be unlocked by defeating any of the non red or yellow death (Stalker, Drowner or Trickster) to do so, you can use one of the wagons in the dairy plant, or use the evolution of the Pentagram, the Gorgeous Moon.

The map isn't important though. I did it in the Bone Zone using O'Sole Meeo for some health regen. The Bone Zone and the new map both have a 100% chance to spawn the Stalker and the Drowner, and in the new map they can even be hurt by weapons, I guess that could work?

Edit: Are you sure you don't already have Toastie? I mean, if there's no popup.

I've heard you need exdash for it to work. Do you have exdash?

thank you both i got it! i did it on stage 5 using pentagram to defeat one of the reapers and pressing down arrow + enter afterwards. :)

Ok...i got the best and easyst way to get Toastie
First take stage where u got the blue death....prepare to NOT have the pentagram already if he spawns since u dont know exactly when it hits so its hard to react...

IF the blue death is filling your screen with water try to get as mutch xp as u can to get your roles....your goal is to get a screen where u can take pentagram BUT DONT TAKE IT asap

IF you take pentagram first time as your ability it instantly aktivates once so make yourself rdy to spamm enter (to take pentagram and also arrow down)....thats the easy way cos u can pepare for toasty

As soon as you see blue death, get the rosary and immediately press down+enter. no need to risk or wait for the random chance of pentagram showing up. This is easy and assured.

Just used this method and got him unlocked first try. It took 6m29s total. Thanks!

I either keep leveling up as Toastie appears or can't react fast enough to press down+enter. I also keep having my screen go out of Fullscreen mode as I'm trying to press buttons. Everything is against me getting this guy unlocked!

in steam you can map custom keyboard keys or mouse buttons to controller buttons.
for this, I mapped the keyboard down arrow to my controller d-pad down button, and the keyboard enter key (not the num pad enter) to my controller a button.
as soon as I killed the blue meanie, easy switch to hitting those two buttons on the controller.

Is it possible for Toastie not to show up at all even when doing everything all right? I tried way too many times, but it only popped up once (and I was too slow to catch it).

I've got a similar-but-different issue with the Leda-over-99 achievement: it never unlocks even going well above level 120 with it.

Toastie can get killed by base pentagram I think? I think that was the one that can kill.
As long as you hold down and hit enter it should work otherwise.

I'd actually say getting clock evo on the tower seems to be the most consistent method... at least for me.
