Is it different? Probably.

And different in what way? That's obviously impossible to answer without knowing, what you expect from this genre.

yes
That's like asking how Doom is different from Call of Duty. Those mobile games you played were built on this game's bones. You're likely playing scam games and asking how the almost original is different.

Which is funny because Vampire Survivors is also on mobile for the extremely high price of zero dollars with ads only being there if you want a free revive.

Also the game is five bucks and Steam will let you refund it before two hours in game or a week has passed

Your mobile games are pretenders to the throne. Being mobile they are built on tweaking your brain to pay more money into the micro transactions. This game tweaks your brain... for no reason than for you to have fun. It has no issue with you tailoring your own experience be that to be harder or massively over powered after you have stuff unlocked. YOU are the master of your experience and there is no alterier motive subtly changing every aspect of the game. This game is based on a premise of achievements unlocking content as made my a guy who worked on slot machines. Which is a far cry from people trying to copy the game... and make it into a slot machine.

edit: oh and we are not joking. This game started the trend and for all intent and purpose invented the genre you are referencing. It is still the undisputed king by a wide WIDE margin. I've only seen a handful of titles that take the formula and do something interesting enough with it to be note worthy. Most are just bad by comparison. So no, you have not "played similar games." You have instead played poor copies of this that then had mobile game feces smeared on them.

I played this a bit on mobile. I love roguelikes. Its pretty fun, but the grind is insane. You will have to spend a VERY long time before you can unlock good/fun stuff and get the skills you need. I had bought one dlc thinking it auto unlocked a bunch of stuff but it doesnt i still need to unlock it in the game first. So if you get this ya its worth the asking price i got it for like 4 bucks and i highly advise against the dlc until you know for sure you like it.

As noted the core design is "do achievo, unlock thing" And to note the grind is better the more you flex the options. Hurry mode exists to shrink time use, and often you do not need to complete a full run to have done the targeted goal. You have options, but yeah oodles and long hours of content to be tackled over time. I do not blame anyone for asking which DLC are more worth their time.

To answer your question OP, Vampire Survivors at this time does not do anything vastly different in terms of formula compared to other games in the genre. It was the inspiration that many future releases drew upon. Some indie-inspired releases even do some things better in my opinion. However, if we are strictly comparing this to mobile games, the quality is almost certainly far higher. The development team has a lot of passion and there are some great official DLC collaborations.

  • Purchase this if you enjoy the genre and want more of the same but of higher quality.
  • Do not purchase this if you are expecting something new in the formula or have high expectations, as you will likely conclude that you have already seen these concepts explored in what you have already played. (Even if this is the original.)

I would argue, honestly, its main points over its competitors is that it has so much content at this point, even without DLCs, that it's much more simple and straightforward than most, and also that it hits the slot machine feel of lots of bright colours and satisfying noises and shiny ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ happening constantly. I feel a lot of Survivors-style games miss that last one particularly hard, and usually make things more serious and bland.

More than once, VS has shown me things I felt were actually epic and stirred up some emotions in my chest, despite being a silly goofy game full of italian puns. People think it's just a "number gets big" genre but this game is so much more than that.

When it first came out, no. Now? Yes.

Seems they completely replaced the soundtrack. It went from outright annoying to amazing.

In my opinion, both of those things have now become the least appealing aspects of Vampire Survivors. Though I can appreciate the first one. Unfortunately, the second one becomes a visibility problem eventually.

Glad it was able to hit for you, but it was never that deep for me. Certainly fun though!
