Like the others have said, pay attention to the "Unlocks" menu. Look for things you may be able to do, and aim for those. It is, almost literally, a list of what characters and levels to play.

That aside, don't neglect the "Power Up" menu, that's key. You can completely refund the gold you spend here as many times as you want, so there's no risk in buying these upgrades; try different setups and see what helps you the most.

If you're generally dying at 30 minutes; great! You've passed the first major hurdle! Getting to the standard time over for a level (usually 30 mins, but it varies) and having Death turn up and kill you is the "good ending" for most runs. Being able to reliably get there means you're doing well. You'll come across other possibilities as you play but, again, Unlocks.

One final thing; if you need to achieve a specific goal for an unlock (like get to a certain level, evolve a certain weapon etc), and you've achieved it on the run, you don't need to finish the run to have it count; you can quit the run, and you'll still get credit for the achievement. That can help speed things up, so you're not having to go for full 30 minute runs if you're achieving your goals in a fraction of that time.

Do the achievements, they unlock more things.
When you first start you'll have a short number of characters and weapons. The game is hardest at this point and you will find your runs end quickly. You will still unlock stuff and you'll slowly start to see how stuff work.

As you play and unlock, little secrets will open up. New stuff about the game presents itself. The game teaches you to play as you play.

There is no failure here. Nothing to lose. No going backwards. No one to compete against.

Just play. Have fun. Explore.

I just feel like my runs are always the same, buy all weapons, find all evolution items, and die after 30 minutes, and I see youtubers do "limit breaks", and get insane stuff that I have no idea what is even going on, and in my runs, that never happens

OP, you know that in order to limit break like the youtuber's do... You need to do the achievements and the story progression, right ?
I don't talk about storymode, but while you unlock more levels and characters in the normal game mode, you will at some point activate the limitbreak ability.

If you don't have the patience to get to that tho, I'm not sure it is the right game for you.

I've got a bit of a question along the same lines as TC, but more on "can I unlock music/characters from the DLC before I go do unlock quests from the main game". Mostly because I played way back when this game had just become 1.0 and I have yet to get around to the stuff added between then and now. I believe I *just* got Arcanas.

Yeah the DLCs have a separate unlock route than the main game.
