Alternatively you can wait until you have the Scrolls of Morbane and just use a cheat code for this unlock instead.
You need to start moving slowly omce it gets dark, as in you can only see in a small circular field of view around you. Walk a few steps, stop then look all around that small viewable area then move after a few seconds. You can't miss the secret, if you do this as he walks around too slowly and is a giant ball of stuff.
Like, you're braver than most if your reaction to seeing an ENDLESS SPAN OF VOID encroaching on you is to sprint deeper. Most people's reaction is to freeze a second and go "Wait did the music stop" and by then The Flying Meatball Monster, Spouse to the flying spaget monster is upon you.
Doesn't He/She (I can't tell) fire projectiles too? Then again projectiles in this game are a non-issue because so many things destroy them so I really can't remember. I've rarely had a run where I don't have some sort of anti-projectile field just by random chance.
* Runes turning into words? I have no idea what you're talking about. I don't recall any runes and I don't recall any words.
* The music stopping? Yea that probably would have been a clue but I had turned off music long ago. Even after I turned it on it wasn't a 'you have arrived' moment. It turned out to be a 'you are close' moment. It still took going down further and tedious searching.. not sure how far.
* The screen going pitch black? Nope, it didn't. Actually that is what I was expecting to happen. Unlike other levels where the screen in fact did turn pitch black and my character was in the middle of nothing, this level did not turn pitch black. It gradually grew too dark to see much further than my character but at a point it didn't get any darker. No 'ah ha' clue. It was an endless screen of chaos from long before it got dark and never let up. The screen was just a solid mass of flashing damage numbers in the dark, tumbling grand pianos, coffins, tables, axes, and all the other effects. I couldn't even tell what kind of monster waves I was plowing through.
* "and then it's upon you"? No, it was never upon me. I was exploring by tapping and then waiting a second before tapping again (thanks to a helpful comment). And when I did manage to come across it (after considerable searching. I had to be within an inch of it) it was practically stationary. It moved like a slug when it did move. At the end of the day it came down to "head down until the music stops and then start slowly inching around an unknown area of darkness looking for a specific 1 inch spot somewhere."
* You said it yourself, "most people's reaction is to..." So, not everyone. That would be crazy if I was the only human who had trouble finding that monster. But then again, so what if I was. It wouldn't really matter to me. It's odd that it mattered to you. But thank you for your time and comment I guess.
When the secret enemy dies, the darkness surrounding your character clears up, iirc, so that's a pretty solid tell.

I would think this counts as pitch black, wouldn't you?

Free tip without giving away anything (hopefully). Your reward for finding this secret is VERY useful for completing another secret (possibly difficult) task when paired with a certain arcana card.
As i fumbled my way around, looking for something, I think i stumbled upon a hidden passage heading west, I walked a bit in true darkness, even the floor was pitch black, until i stepped into a tower... again.
The enemies had stopped spawning by then, so, completely clueless and confused, I just went north until the light came around again, and I actually reached the merchant but it was to my righto on the map and completely unreachable.
After i managed to find the boss and defeat them, i attempted to find this spot again, but without success.
Just tossing this out there, in case someone feels like exploring
Well, then you'll be over-stunned to hear that I went down there about 4 times, heard the music stop, saw everything go dark, and eventually even noticed the flying runes turning into words, and just kept running every time. My reaction wasn't to stop, because I was completely OP by then, and I was less concerned with getting suddenly killed and more concerned with getting to whatever it was I was supposed to reach. The silence and blackness just made me think I must be getting closer, which was all the more reason to keep going. And with something as dramatic as the music stopping and everything going dark, the last thing to occur to me was that the object of my search was something I could safely and easily just run right past without even noticing.
Times will ALWAYS vary because every character has different movement speeds with Red Death being the fastest. Also you mentioned you were playing with "Hurry Mode" enabled, so that 13 minutes you mentioned is actually 25 to 26 minutes without "Hurry Mode" enable, which is inline with the "usual" time frame it takes for you to get to where Leda hangs out.
On my first run I flew right past because I expected something unmissable. I figured the darkness meant I was close, and then I spent a long, stupid while just flying around the map and in and out of that secret room with the mirror, thinking I must be missing something or that something was glitched. (Which it was, since I was clipping in and out of the map, not discovering cool intentional secrets.)
Second run I looked up what to do. Stop when the music changes? Okay, sure, I put the music on blast and paused every time the tempo changed. Once the music finally stopped I wasn't sure exactly when it had stopped, between all the explosion sounds, and I couldn't get it to start again when I doubled back, so I could no longer use music as a cue.
Stop when the screen goes completely black? I can barely tell the difference between the tower being "completely dark" and "mostly dark" on my Deck, but I finally figured it out. I think. Sure, the fine details of the rest of the screen mostly disappear, but all that means is that I spend even more time accidentally clipping through the walls and out of the map. I was expecting true blackness, like you get in other fights, but nope. If I stumble into true blackness it's because I'm off the map again.
Stop when the runes turn to words? I can't see the runes most of the time unless I fling myself off the map and peer around. But sure, I finally found roughly where that change happened, and then spent 45 increasingly insanity-inducing moments inching around my screen, back and forth, over and over, slowly working my way down and then back up, seeing absolutely no sign of anything other than infinite waves of monsters. I went back and forth over the entire section where it changes from mostly dark with runes to completely dark with words OVER AND OVER AND OVER, going further down and then back up in case I'd missed the secret magic window, seeing absolutely nothing except infinite OP explosions and the occasional hint of normal enemies before I vaporized them.
I kept thinking that surely I'd find and kill Leda just by accident, but... no.
So I give up. It's absolutely bonkers that this could possibly be so difficult, and I can't believe I wasted so much time on it, and okay, venting over, thank you for your time and also ARGH.
