Stage Progression number?

I am confused, whenever I tick or untick hide stage progression, I don't see a difference. Is the level at the top right? Or is that character XP level?

The only thing I've noticed so far, is once you de-select hide stage progression or whatever, when you know it should be "on" and then you start the game. On the character select screen, there should now be a box at the right side of the screen that should show different maps. Some of the characters may have a check mark next to some of the maps. I only have one so far and it is with Arca and it shows a check next to the Library, but only when I have Arca selected. I think this means you have reached level 80 on that character on that level, but I'm not for sure what it means. I did unlock the coffin on the Library stage with Arca, I don't know for sure I guess it could require that. I only know that specific setting shows the checklist on your characters for each level, I don't know what the checks mean.

that marks the levels you have 'completed', ie. had red death show up to kick you teeth in. it doesn't do anything in of itself, it's just there for completionists to fill out.

Yes, reaching 30 minutes has Red Death show up to kill you. At that point the stage is considered complete.

some of the special stages are won at 15 minutes.
