how do you make progress in this game?
i like this game and i am having a lot of fun, but it is frustrating because my character can simply not deal enough damage to handle the enemies past level 15. i also am barely getting any gold because the blue enemies are always surrounded by other enemies. I cant even get to level 20 to unlock the next stage. Is there anything i can do to move forward in this game?

Are you actually taking levels in your weapons or are you just blindly grabbing new ones?

By the sound of things you're still in Mad Forest playing as Antonio.

As Noelle said above, just focus on choosing upgrades for your whip for now so you can get a little bit stronger.

Hey I suggest like others say start out with focusing on your starting weapon level that up to 8 and get the other item it needs to upgrade it you need the Duplicator to evolve it
I personally always get the Book and garlic every playthrough as there very strong and fun to use
Also Mad Forest I found to be sorta hard at first if you unlock Inlaid Library Reach Level 20 in Mad Forest I suggest playing through that level a bunch so you can earn coins and get powerups
Hope this helps

At the beginning of a run try not to spread your levels across a bunch of weapons/items.

When you have the option to put a level in an existing weapon OR pick a new weapon/item, put the level in the weapon you already have.

I'm going to guess you've been spending your gold, but if you've been saving it for any reason: don't. Spend all of it on power ups. They may not seem like much but they're a huge help in smoothing out the the beginning of your runs.

Resetting your powerups returns all spent gold, so you're free to tinker with them as much as you want.

Upgrade Garlic and Bible a lot at first. Santa Water doesn't hurt either. Once you do this, you will start to see progress, and the game will open up even further, revealing even more strategies.

wow your advice is so helpful thank you
Porta is a great option, if you focus on earning various achievements (like breaking 20 torches or reaching certain milestones) you'll unlock new content fairly readily. Porta starts with that great wand, so mixing that with garlic, the empty tome, the pummarola, items like those with good synergies that compliment her wand, that's a surefire way to make good progress. Also, it's expected for you to be dying around the ten minute mark until you buy a few good perma-upgrades and unlock a few new items, so don't stress it too much. Just keep playing and you'll naturally accumulate gold, which lets you unlock permanent upgrades, which let you progress farther, which lets you accumulate more gold... it's a snowball effect.
