Wait... *checks wiki*. Oh, that requires Torrona's too. Well that explains why I thought both weapons just evolved without needing anything. I mean, when would you ever not take Torrona's Box?
When you're a beginner and see that curse makes stronger, faster, and more enemies, you'd most likely think...stronger faster AND more?!?! WHy!??!?! Especially if you haven't even managed to get to 30 minutes in a game yet. You probably also haven't unlocked all the power ups yet and probably don't understand more enemies gets you more xp so faster leveling up. After you've gotten most of the power ups in the game however, curse then becomes appealing.
I was quite confused about curse when I started playing. Now, it's something to pick if you want to level up faster. I only really learned about how good curse was when I started getting achievements to get to level 99 on characters.
