Step 2: Have the correct 6 Passives
Step 3: ???
Step 4: Profit
if you absolutely have to have laurel or clock lancet, those work too, you just need to pick up the respective passives from the map.
Though, it depends on play style, what items the game is giving you, and experience in the game. Sometimes leveling a passive might make a huge difference, like Empty Tome where it will reduce your weapon cooldowns making all of them fire off faster which might just save your skin early game.
But, also prioritize picking up passives when you see them. If you have the Fire Wand weapon for instance, if you see Spinach as a new passive you can pickup you should definitely do so because you may not see it again.
It helps to have some skips/banishes/rerolls, but you usually won't need many.
This is my general strategy:
Top priorities (in order)
- Pick up item I want but don't have yet (assuming it's not a map item)
- Pick up weapon I want but don't have yet
- Upgrade Orb/Crown (these are growth accelerators, so max them ASAP)
- Upgrade weapon with fewest levels until max (discount weapons whose item is a map item that you don't have yet)
These two have equal priority and can be chosen by preference
- Upgrade preferred item
- Banish something I don't want
And Finally
- Skip
- Reroll
Reasoning:
Skip is only preferred to reroll to ensure that you have some rerolls left for arcana selection. If you're hurting for equipment then burning some rerolls is fine.
Banishing is preferred to both, because it improves the odds of getting something you actually want on subsequent level-ups. Remember to save a banish for Torrona/Skull if you plan to avoid some curse that way. Don't banish map items that you want to level up later, because picking them up will just give you the one level and you'll never be able to upgrade them. (You can do this with Skull O'Maniac if you only want it for the evo.)
I usually get Mad Groove at 11 minutes, but remember to not pick up map items you want until you have 6 items already.
Try to make a build that won't strand you with super low damage or utility. Your end build may be great, but if you do no damage until it's complete then you're going to have a bad time.
Instead of picking a character and then grabbing whatever appears on the level up screen, decide on at least 3 or 4 weapons that you want, BEFORE you get into the game. That way, you know what you are looking for and are more likely to be able to evolve all 6 weapons.
