It looks like it gets stronger with the character level, in addition to absorbing skeletons while rolling. I killed it with Leda and the arcana, which stops gaining experience.

Just rush it. Red Death, Leda, really anyone with either a high damage output or a high movement speed.

It gets larger the longer you're on the map, and eventually it's primary hitzone is off-screen and it has more health than a death/reaper does, at which point it's basically unkillable.

But you can very, very easily kill it within the first minute or 2 with any remotely powerful character.

Personally did it with death, but leda probably makes more sense. Alternatively, any character you have massively egged.

I dont have leda? i thought leda is unlocked by getting the item that the bone ball drops?

Yeah, people shouldn't be recommending secret characters to get the item that tells you how to get secret characters.
Get a few levels for weapons and then immediately run to the question mark to fight the ball. Pick weapons that target the nearest enemy and weapons that can be directed. Dagger is a good pick. Make sure you get in front of the katamari so that your knockback will keep it from rolling forward, this will slow how many enemies it absorbs and keep it on screen so that you can press damage. If you wait too long, it'll be too strong to reasonably kill and you'll need to try again.
If you've unlocked the Yellow Sign, you can instead go for Infinite Corridor to cut its HP in half over and over until it's killable.

Leda is unlocked by going down Galio Tower until you encounter him after the room gets pitch black. Then you kill him.

Then take Leda into Bone Zone and immediately head south. Catch the Ball of Bones on it's trek right and kill it with the evolved magic wand.

It doesn't have to be Leda. You can use Red Death or Marrabio too.

I don't consider this the best game design no. If it were a secret, I'd be okay with it. But it's a collection item and on the map so it shouldn't get to the point where it's impossible to kill unless you look at a guide or someone tells you.

I do find the boss fun though and had a blast when I didn't figure it out the first run and it was massive.

I used a fully upgraded La Robba which actually stopped the ball from rolling.

I'm surprised no one else has said it yet, so I will:

30 hours is rookie numbers.

Sword (cross upgrade) will do it. I used Gains for the hell of it but basically the boss just rolls left to right then right to left after a while so as long as you have enough speed to stay in front of or behind him you'll be safe. The real issue is the mobs, you'll want something like rune tracer or or king's bible (or their upgrades) to handle them. Enough AoE = he can't absorb anything cus it is already dead.

Red Death very easily kills the thing, and honestly, I'd hardly call them a secret character. You will naturally unlock them if you just experiment with the new things you unlock as you progress. As I said in another post complaining about this, all you need to do is take Red Death, take Silent Old Sanctuary, and beeline straight for the bone katamari. Once you're there, stay in front of it and keep as close as possible to maximize your damage. The knockback from you weapon will keep it almost stationary. Doable even with eggs turned off, and done in less than 2 minutes.

Ran at the ball with Red Death since he's actually fast enough to catch it. Hugged the bone ball gently and let crit-scythes (arcana pick that allows scythes to crit) hit it for ~400 x 2 to 3 per cluster of scythes.

Died in 2 minutes and unlock was confirmed.

I used Porta with the Game Killer arcana to take advantage of her cooldown bonus. Combined with all the weapons from the merchant, I made relatively quick work of the bone ball as well as the surrounding enemies.
Johnny Thunder Aug 5, 2022 @ 7:25pm
one shotted it with upgraded cross
Conga Lyne Aug 5, 2022 @ 8:41pm
Just kill it normally with a big dps build, I used fuwaloo + moon + laurel on christine with 94% cdr

You can wait until you have a late game build to fight it, since it seems to spawn at the ? on your map everytime, just don't approach it until you're ready
Did it first try. Use red death and go to it asap. Collect some xp on the way and upgrade damage or cooldown if possible. Should be easy even without arcana, but get the slash arcana if you have it unlocked!

Just to add what has been said Infinite Corridor + Crimson Shroud guarantees you will kill it even if you go past 30 minutes and it turns huge.

Death does not seem to spawn if you are fighting the bone pile until after the bone pile dies.

After you kill the bone pile your first death will spawn after the next one minute mark so you get to explore an empty map mark for up to a minute depending to on when the bone pile dies.

EDIT: Taking this approach meant I did 1G damage with Infinite Corridor so no idea how much health I ended up giving the bone pile
