Black Bars on the sides of the screen

Is it intentional or am I missing something?

Did you minimize your game while playing? My game fails to go back to fullscreen properly if I minimize it to do something else on the computer.

It can be fixed by toggling off and on the fullscreen checkbox in Options. But you can't do it during a run and have to wait till you go back to title screen.

No I didn't minimize it at all but even when I uncheck and check the 'fullscreen' option, the black bars on the side still remain.
