This is no longer true. The price scaling was changed to a flat rate so that it is no longer necessary to buy things in a certain order to spend the least possible Gold. I'm pretty sure this had the knock-on effect of making getting everything substantially cheaper, which would be where your extra Gold came from.
Previously, the cost of power ups were based around how many other power ups you had purchased and some power ups were more expensive to start with, so there was an 'optimal' purchase pattern. Usually it started with buying rerolls, revives, curse, amount, any 5 point upgrade, then 2-3 point upgrades.
With the latest 0.7 patch, each item has a fixed cost. So, it doesn't matter what order you buy things in. Every item has a fixed cost, so it doesn't matter what order you buy things in.

As people have already pointed out, buy order is now a thing of the past.
With the 2 new DLCs, that's not even close to how much money you need to buy everything.
