Also the cats get stronger for every floor chicken they pick up. Just be careful as they are also prone to steal it from you when you try to pick it up.

Cats are better than people give them credit for. You need luck to use them, luck makes more of those grey clouds they make from time to time and anything that goes in those things is pretty much dead. They also scale off virtually everything. Speed, area, might, duration, luck, almost every stat improves the cats. Do not evolve them though. The evolved version just isn't very good. Stick with the base cats and pump them up. They will eventually do so much damage all over the map.

Early on get a couple of other weapons so you can survive while you upgrade the cats. Bible, Garlic, Lightning Ring, cross are all good picks for this.

Once you have a few weapons to keep you safe while you upgrade the cats:
Focus on getting the cats to max level, and focus on the following stats with the upgrades you pick:
luck, duration, extra projectiles, area, projectile speed

Also, don't pick up any chicken unless you're about to die and really need the health. The more chicken the cats pick up, the more damage they do.

Do NOT get the stone mask. If it pops up in a level-up, Banish it. If it's on the field, discard it if you run into it. The upgraded cats kinda suck and lose all of what makes the cats good in the first place.

Max level cats with upgrades to the stats mentioned above are hilarious and will shred just about everything.

Vicious Hunger works really well for gold farming. You are otherwise correct.

Cats absolutely carried my green acres run. The fact that they actively DON'T need to be evolved, and don't require a paired passive slot, makes them that much better.

Also, pump as much area into them as possible. They become twice bigger than human.
