What is the purpose of the coffins on each floor?

I've been by them several times, I've even killed all the defenders. Is this where the "end" boss comes from or is there a different purpose?

they're a bit finicky, so it might not pop right away, just wiggle around on top of it for a bit.

It's not a secret lol. The coffins are unlockable characters. When you reach a coffin, "Guardians" will spawn. Make sure have enough strength (weapons) to handle them.. really isn't super difficult, but if you're not familiar with the game, maybe don't go to the coffins until you have 2 or 3 Evolved weapons... Dunno if you even really need that many just to do it, but could be wrong. Anyway, when you kill the guardians around the coffin, just stand on top of it, and you will have unlocked a character that you will be able to purchase from the character select screen. Edit: I see that you said that you killed all the guardian guys. Just stand directly on top of the coffin.

They aren't finicky at all. To open a coffin you have to kill all of it's defenders first.
