The passives that affect it primarily are Luck (increased chances of fighting and chickens to eat), Area of Effect (larger cats and larger fights), Duration (Longer fights), and Cooldown. It is also affected by projectile speed but not as significantly as the above.
The cats in order to be meaningful need to be purposely fed the floor chickens from the candles but this aspect has recently been nerfed with the recent patch for larger gains.
As for using the cats itself early game you need to keep leading the enemies towards the cats to slash. As you level up and gain more levels on the cats and any of the above passives you have increased chance for the cats to fight and you work with that to bring enemies there to die quickly.
The cats are tricky to use but they are still strong enough but the late game nerf does hurt it, although the teaser for May 8 update shows that it is llikely to be gaining an evolution in the upcoming patch.
My technique for using Cats in the early game is to walk in circles around the enemies. Try not to run directly away from them, that causes them to fall off the screen and teleport in front of you which is bad. If you stay just out of reach and walk circles around them they blob up in the center, you don't have to dodge as many coming from the edges, and the cats have a better chance of getting kills.
it's a little hard in the Library because of the top and bottom walls, but you can still do it.
Because the cap kinda gimped them. And even though you still need them for the Level 200 Toastie Death kill build, they're no longer the main DPS that kills Death.
That or Death Spiral with Slash and the bouncing scythes one.
Cat is for meme fun build if you really want to invest into it. In Bone map it's irrelevant naturally since there's no food for it to scale (and it's the most relevant challenge content rn), but outside it's kinda w/e. In Library you can farm food because candles everywhere but other maps they don't drop as much.
Pretty much no one runs cat in WR / leaderboard, and normal content is easy enough to run whatever.
If you start out as giovanna, banish those ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ straight to the buffet, you will thank me later.
They cannot steal chests... They can only steal what candles drop, which aren't gold, chests are not something they can interact with. Also depending on the level and the item they may actually activate said item for you, like when they take a cross or an attract orb it works. Other than that eating chickens only powers them up in damage and size, to increase probability of fighting.
If you lost a chest the only thing that comes to mind that can do that is Pentagram, and higher likelihood with less luck and and levels to the weapon. Otherwise nothing else can delete a chest.
When they did the cat frenzy cloud thing it literally took a chest away. I am pretty sure I didn't have pentagram at the time. Not sure if bug or something else.
