Toastie has insane luck and no need of chicken though
If you get hollow heart it raises your (small) amount of hp high enough to survive their scratches.
Laurel generally works as well.
I also wouldn't pick them up too early. They aren't needed up to level 50 and getting them early, especially if you don't have the above solutions, just means you are rolling the dice.
Not only worth using but Toastie is actually pretty hard to survive with without it (due to Cat fights being safe zones for Toastie)
Clover also help mitigate the thing + giving (potentially) a little more possibilities when leveling up.
Laurel is a really good thing to keep and make sure nothing happen to you in some cases.
Also, yeah, it's better to pick them up later, you should have a reliable weapon before trying to cats your way, because they're everything other than reliable ...
1. Restart until you get a start where you can dodge the red ghost and get a rank 2 garlic by level 3. When you get that start, you can safely run through the mud men to the left towards the tomes.
2. Don't pick up anything else until you can brute force a rank 8 garlic and at least rank 4 spinach. Banish and skip if you must, but you should only have peachone, garlic, and spinach until you finish this. You can now run through mummies and ectoplasms safely.
3. On minutes 6 and 7, you need to try and keep dodging the purple headless zombies. Don't try standing in place, run horizontally zig-zagging in between them. You can run through the green. Dodge the red.
4. You need to get upgraded axes on your 10 minute boss kill. This allows you to survive until you max out everything else.
5. To get to 200 without skull-o-maniac you need to keep killing enemies as soon as they appear on the screen. You do this by moving until your cat scuffles are on the edge so enemies walk into them immediately.
The only time you should die with the above is if you get caught by a red ghost while running past purple zombies on minute 7. The hardest part is the RNG of forcing an early max rank garlic with spinach.
Go with this set-up:
Garlic
Axes
Cats
Vandalier birbs
Pentagram
Whip
Spinach
Candelabrador
Armor
Hollow Heart
Crown
Tiragisu
Empty Tome (pick this up after you get the above)
Start with the critical hits for axes arcana card. If you don't think you can make it to minute 11 without dying, you can start with awaken, but then you need to hope to get critical axes on minute 11 immediately.
Don't get whip until you upgrade birbs.
Garlic is good early, but worthless later, so I tried ditching it for Mana of Song. That works, but Mana of Song is so damn rare, that it eats up hours just rerolling for it. The original method called for Garlic AND Song, but the latest patch method calls just for Song.
I even decided to ditch the average, and go for the Axes and Bible combo. That mostly works, although it's hard to pop off, but somehow, I always end up dying somewhere around the 16 minute mark.
Honestly, I'm just sick of the game at this point. I wasn't exaggerating about the 15+ hours of tries. I'm sick of playing Toastie.
I gave the Library Runetracer AFK method another try today (my 5th), and this time it worked perfectly, but when the second Reaper came, I lost lives, and the third Reaper took my last. I'm done with Reaper runs.
You need to die. The point with the above set up is with awaken, armor, tiragisu, and upgraded whip you cannot die to reapers. Like they literally cannot kill you. But you only reach that point after your 5th death.
This means if you start with awaken arcana, you can die up to 5 times. It is the safer option, but if RNG doesn't give you critical axes on minute 11 then the run is dead and you need to restart. You won't have the dps waiting until minute 21 to get it.
You only need garlic so you can quickly get xp from running through everything up to minute 10. Upgraded axes carries you after that.
If you can brute force a max rank garlic with spinach early on, I don't think you should have a problem getting to upgraded axes with less than 5 deaths.
