and garlic till u have some more power ups and dont need garlic anymore
Other question I would as is that what character(s) did you unlock and try to play with?
Yes, you can farm some maps for coins that you can invest into powerups but for me that wasn't really huge (and I did not really got too much powerups before getting through first level). For me was most important to understand what skills play nice with each other (and not only the matter of evolution but also how one skill would benefit from the other). Once I got hang on it I would just die only if RNG gods are playing tricks on me.
Personally I would recommend using Gennaro. His knives take some getting used to, but being able to aim your starting weapon can help a lot, I think. The whip is a great defensive weapon because it has knock-back and can be aimed at breakables unlike the wand or the cross. Garlic allows you to walk through bats in the Mad Forest, but isn't so good in the Library, the 2nd stage. Still, you should get at least one of Garlic, Holy Bible or Santa Water, the defences. My personal go-to offensive weapon is the Fire Wand, because it can melt bosses or groups of enemies. I think that's what you need, a somewhat levelled Fire Wand to melt a group of skeletons and then you try and run through the gap. For the passives, everyone recommends the Empty Tome because it reduces cool-downs.
What you "are doing wrong" is blaming the game instead of taking responsibility for learning how to play.
So far, this is kinda major flaw of the game, at least for me. The fact that with correct skills "Late game" is actualy so much less fun.
I would say first 10-15 minutes of stage 1 is when this game is the best and everything what is happening after that requires some serious rebalancing or rework.
All the other stuff like cross and knife and whip are good too but garlic and the bible that will take you through the skelly horde.
But they can't be lvl 1 you need to prioritize them somewhat.
So a couple of levels in bible and garlic.
