From my experience, they will also follow your character a dozen or so screen lengths away as they move right/left/up/down. You could move just right for 10 minutes and then only have to go left a minute to pick up all the gems you missed.
If you think your experience just poofed permanently, the devs have said this isn't the case in the pinned threads.
I was standing there from minute 13 to minute 28. I got two levels from a full screen sweep of all the gems, and I did try leaving the area and coming back. Only extra experience I got was from the things I killed along the way.
I ended that game at level 72. I normally end games at 110-130, and the only thing I do different from that one is run in circles to pick up the experience.
Also, what was your build that you could stand still through all those bosses, including the main one for 15 minutes?
Yeah, it only took about 20 seconds to clear the gems and 30 seconds to leave and come back so that I could be prepared for 29+.
My builds generally look about like this: https://i.imgur.com/3mIJlbY.png
Common theme is Bones, Unholy Vespers, Death Spiral, and Runetracer. The last 2 weapons are generally going to be Santa Water, Hellfire, or Holy Wand. They all pretty much perform the same as far as what level I end up. Sometimes I get unlucky and up with items outside those like in that screenshot in particular, but it still turned out fine.
My accessories takes are usually aiming for Spellbinder, Spinach, Candelabra, Duplicator, Bracer, and Vacuum. Then add on Tome and Stone Mask from the library pickup spots. The rest is from silver/gold chests.
You're repeating misinformation. If you test it yourself, you'll see that you're wrong. There's a very obvious cap on gems that you'll notice if you let the game idle for a while before picking them up.
"Starting Tips
Take your time to grab gems and items, they won't disappear."
Right there on the store page.
"Picking up items
Items on the ground will not disappear. If there are too many gems on the ground, they simply start merging together, forming red gems."

Right there in the pinned topic. The first developer comment.
Many people have picked up even a blue gem and leveled multiple times.
Interesting, it appears since the gems don't transform into red ones when on screen the game can only have X amount on the floor. That or it removes old gems to drop the new ones leaving you with a net loss.
I would have to test it for myself but I'm guessing it removes old gems otherwise killing new enemies would drop nothing.
It says they won't disappear, not that they won't fail to appear in the first place. Also, it says if there are too many on the *ground*, they will merge, not if there are too many on the *screen*.
People getting multiple levels off one gem is because they were moving in a direction while killing, and the gems left across many screens were merging. In our case, we are not moving while killing, so there is no merging happening because the gems stop spawning in the first place.
Here's video proof. After standing in one spot for 10 minutes and then sweeping up all the gems with Vacuum, I gain *one* single level. I leave and come back, and there are no suddenly merged gems waiting for me. Just a sad wasted 10 minutes where I could've gotten 30+ levels.

I was wrong, the old gems don't disappear it even looks like they stop spawning after the min 20 in game (min 3 of the video). I have no clue why since I have seen plenty more gems on my screen but I'm always moving.
A lot of levels where? I am 60, pick up all the area's gems to 61, leave, come back, and normal level farming speed is happening from the fresh kills. That shows you how fast I am gaining levels from gathering the gems normally rather than let them hit screen cap.
Not having room to spawn is debunked by the fact you can see mobs dying in the front lines too consistently for it to end in one level after 10 minutes, including the two bosses that come up close to me, and not even they drop gems, just chests.
XP buff has nothing to do with it. I almost never carry XP buff and would be at least 90+ level by 27 minutes if I actively pick up the gems.
