How to finish a run WITHOUT Garlic/Bible?

Every run i've finished has only been because of the upgraded/evolved Garlic and Bible combo keeping enemies off me in the last few minutes before the Reaper shows up.
I'm having a hard time finding another build that's actually viable late-game with the existing items, so i'm wondering what other item/weapon combos currently work that don't rely on having to have Garlic and Bible, as they are starting to feel like a crutch now.

Any ideas?

Every other upgraded weapons :)
You can go with projectiles build with Mortaccio. /runetracer, thousand edges, knives, hellfire, wand) and enjoy 5fps run

all upgraded weapons would carry you to the end with varying ease of use, but I do find Unholy Vespers to be the one crutch I'd always have in my slots. Mostly because I have a bad habit of afking past 20min mark anyway and other weapons like boomerang or knife needs a bit of dancing to it.

I almost never take garlic and think it's an awful weapon. Bible is okay, but upgraded birds can almost accomplish the same thing on their own with the added benefit of having the highest damage.

- Upgraded birds is hard to lose with.
- Runetracer is amazing and is easily the strongest unevolved weapon in the game.
- Upgraded Axe is another amazing weapon. If you have Axe and Bird, then you literally can't lose.
- You can consider Santa Water. I actually wrote it off until recently. It's fairly strong when you have it upgraded and works well with the passives that are worth taking such as Candle for size and Spellbinder for duration. Maybe not amazing, but still better than garlic. It's fun to fill the screen with it.
- Could also consider Fire Wand. It's evolved from using Spinach, so you're not losing out a passive slot like you are if you wanted to upgrade garlic. I'll sometimes take it after evolving the birds since I have a free slot after they combine. The evolved version can easily clear a path through enemies, making moving around much easier.
- Cross is great. Honestly, it's just better garlic.

There was a brief time I thought garlic was good. Nowdays, it's a weapon I avoid unless I'm creating a purposefully bad run and rank it near Laurel.

Pretty much anything else. Garlic is one of the worst weapons lategame. Bible is okay but there are much better alternatives. Pretty much anything else is superior to these 2 in the endgame (apart from pentagram which is a jokingly bad).

Wand, it knocks back the closest enemies, so if you have good AOE that can clear outside, the few that closes to you will be easily taking care of by Wand.

If you are only getting to late game because the garlic, try wand or cross, those are great early game items too.

I just stack projectiles and cooldown. I have never used garlic or bible to finish a run.

I find the bible to be an excellent space making tool. It makes a pretty great wall if paired with duplicator (which you should always take) and speed. I will always take bible unless I already have another close ranged weapon like whip or wand. You can easily win with "only" 4 or 5 strong items, so I like to grab bible to keep things off me long enough for my other weapons to kill them.

Garlic, while excellent early game, falls off very hard because it doesn't scale with many stats and has very low damage. Once you've bought the meta perk to give you an extra projectile pretty much anything else is a better pick even early game.

If I wasn't able to take bible as my close ranged weapon my next choice would probably be axe since the upgraded version also hits in a circle around you. It also goes pretty well with Santa Water since the axe can knock enemies into the water pools.

Aiming for super bird is another route to victory. If you can last long enough to get that online, you basically win regardless of what other items you have.

best are book + garlic + santa water + wand
get the evolution and you can afk all the game

Garlics DPS is horrible, but that's not what makes Garlic useful. The knockback upon an enemy entering into its zone is the useful part.

This works best in library, since you can get two additional defensive abilities

Remember to wait until you have 6 defensive abilities before you pickup the Empty Book and the Stone Mask (these are found in the map itself

You are half correct. While it is one of the worst weapons late game, in terms of raw DPS, it is perhaps one of the best utility weapons. If you get this, combined with anything that causes knockback, it gives you an almost free win, because garlic has the unique property of lowering an enemy's knockback resistance. Coupled with just the transformed bible, you can stand still for the entirety of the run. Add the transformed axe, and you have an almost 100% chance of winning.
