One difference I can tell from playing most of the SO games (1~4) and Xenoblade 1 only, is that Xenoblade 1 relies a lot on rotation with cooldown on skills and such, and is a lot more strategic in how you approach enemies ? Like the break-topple-daze combos and such.
Star Ocean is more about maximizing damage, managing the items you can carry with you (you can use items in battles to heal), and party setup/strategy in between battles with crafting and gathering skills. Battles are also a lot more action oriented than Xenoblade.
You could say Xenoblade is more about strategy during battle, and Star Ocean is more about strategy in between battles.
Disclaimer: I haven't finished Xenoblade 1 yet, and I want to go through each installment eventually, so I don't look at xenoblade 2 or 3 content to avoid spoilers.
No matter how you feel about Xenoblade 1, Xenoblade 2, or the first 15 hours of Xenoblade 3.... push through it on 3 and you will be super super happy you did
3 past the first bit is simply the best rpg on switch
I know at least that much ;) don't worry, I will get through it.
For combat my guess is it will be a dual skill close/long range system like in the original with some type of move stat like Tales of Arise with similarities to it but more fast paced and less skills equipped at a time. Someone who has played the demo could better educate on this, though, as I have not.
Not to spoil you just minor things to consider:
Xenoblade Chonricles (original) as you might already know has an okay story and cast, solid combat with pre-defined roles builds (some role flexibility though) per character, and is massive.
Xenoblade Chronicles X (aka 2nd game) is massive. Like utterly stupid levels of massive (take the other games, combine them with Witcher 3, GTA 5, Skyrim, Fallout games, and maybe a few other games and it would still be bigger...). The game is very open unlike the others where you progress any way you wish for most content aside from the main story which is kind of weak. This one is not story focused, but rather character focused with side events and a single town you develop from the start. It has mechs which you may or may not use but most of the game can be done without mechs if you don't care for them. Anyone can be nearly any build they want. This is a gameplay and exploration first and foremost experience, not a story driven entry.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (aka actually 3rd game) is much more story driven and linear like the original but environments appear to be much smaller and rather poorly utilized if I'm being honest... Story is okay but not that original or interesting, but the cast is enjoyable even if they're nothing special. This has a blade system which is like a flexible custom role system you can somewhat preset and swap on the fly. The game has an immense amount of flaws and, imo, by far the worst of the franchise I've experienced. I'd only recommend to a fan looking for something to play just for more to play... Overall, I'm not going to say it wont be anyone's favorite, or that that some can't prefer certain aspects of it over others but the game is definitely loaded with a number of flaws that make it appear rushed and counteract its own design elements (like blade freedom locked behind... not being able to swap specific core blades forced onto your character, not getting additional blades past 2 until hours in, rng, Tora limiting blade mechanics and diversity for a huge chunk of the game because single locked blade, blades not being actually that unique or great tbh..., bizarre convoluted mechanics like X character superb at Ether cannons and terrible at launching blah blah that isn't transparent whatsoever, limited customization because of resources such as blade swapping, etc... just so many issues if being honest). I'd play this last... Unless you don't like X's story limited approach. IF you are to play XC2 my advice is to go in accepting you have to play hours to get stuff unlocked and accepting where it is flawed rather than agonizing over it. Simply accept it for what it is and do your best to enjoy it as is and that should make it more digestible.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 I've not played. Check reviews lol.
I keep hearing how good Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is, but the gameplay in 2 was such a huge turn off that you couldn't even pay me to play 3. I did beat 2 because I paid so much for it and the expansion, but man, do I regret that purchase big time. Never even touched the expansion stuff just wanted that garbage to be over. The only good thing about that game to me was the fanservice.
Should have been something I liked, but the slow auto-attacking that doesn't even work when moving, drawing your weapon and the instant horrible feeling that you were under water, the positionals, arts cancelling, driver combos, blade combos, fusion combos, and so on... The combat just felt like busy work. Like there were just so many unnecessary layers to the combat that it just wasn't fun.
From what I've seen with Xenoblade 3 it doesn't look any better. I've been trying to find a reason to give it a chance, because I got like $50 in gold points that expire this year, but the game looks just as bad as 2 was in the combat, and the fanservice appears heavily toned down from 2 also.
