For starters, I didn't exactly say that they had a problem with Steam. I just said that Steam adds this extra overhead that cuts into their bottom line. A sale added onto a loyalty discount added to what Steam takes ultimately means that they net less.
Also, I can't say why they don't just up and move this stuff to Adobe's site. That's anybody's guess. It just might be more convenient to keep it here instead. Moving things over would require them moving the existing database of license holders as well as creating this new infrastructure to handle perpetual licenses, a system that they moved away from ages ago.
It might well be NONE of that and keeping things on Steam may simply be a convenience and courtesy for legacy Allegorithmic customers who've been here for ages; Adding to that, from an end user's perspective, license management on Steam IS crazy easy in that "set it and forget it" way.
Whatever the reason, let's just be thankful that, for however long, a perpetual option still exists and it's still here on Steam.
FWIW, I remember the "old days" when Allegorithmic tried to manage both Steam and Allegorithmic side licensing and sales. It was often a nightmare, at least from my POV. Moving licenses over from one to the other... Licenses getting lost/forgotten in the system... Bad sync when it came to license start/stop periods... The whole thing was an inconvenient nightmare. Great in principle, but (I'm guessing) that it created a small headache for Allegorithmic's people. As much as I complained about the exclusive move over to Steam at the time, it more or less simplified the entire process.
they charge £120 for amazing softwares .. which are perpetual licenses... do you realise the size of the team and how much wages cost... nobody likes what adobe does with subscriptions... its destroyed creativity yes... but at the same time they are running a company and paying wages... im just thankful they do yearly perpetual licenses.
maybe take a step back calm down
L
I couldn't agree more.... They have been keeping the licenses for us... They could of said nope and did sub only.. But they expanded it with Stager, Sampler last year, and I hear Modeler is coming... which I bet they delayed it for Modeler, not because of the sale...
I been a user since day 1, and I'm happy to wait if they need longer.. People need to calm down....... and yes Steam takes 30% which is alot for us game devs as well.. it hurts... So ADobe with Sales, hurts more..... So they need to run a business as well...
So this stuff costs money to make, and by them missing one sale, for us, is not a big deal, they offer a deal to those that bought the year before every year, so..... Not sure why people want more of a deal.... If they don't make money, then, we will lose our programs...
It needs to be good for us and them.. So being greedy, is what some users are being if they expect a double discount every damn year, cmon guys run a business, and then you will understand......
I'm sure they had good reason, for the delay, and I bet it was not the sale....
Going by their website Toolbag 4 is basically a texturing & rending tool, comparable to Substance Painter. Their individual perpetual license goes for $255 at the time of writing (including Black Friday discount). However: non-commercial use only. And you only got yourself a texturing / rendering / baking tool.
See, for that price you can get yourself both Substance Painter and Designer on Steam, full price (each go for approx. $125). So that means: not only do you get yourself a texturing / painting / baking tool. You'll also get a development environment which allows you to design your own textures, material presets and 3D primitives alike from the ground up. (edit): Almost forgot... and you can easily use both products for commercial purposes as well, no strings attached.
Don't get me wrong here: I'm not trying to insinuate that Toolbag is a bad product or something, absolutely not. However, in direct comparison to what's available on Steam... I honestly think you can get more value for your money. Of course that also depends on what you want to get out of all this, true enough.
well yea but marmoset toolbag is amazing... and individual license gives you commercial use only academic doesnt
but yea youre right you get both for that money .. but youre comparing apples to pears.. they are both used for different things...
i always say .. enjoy yourself
Designer you can use inside of a game engine, Tool bag you can't... You also have modeling tools inside of Designer, and much more.... So, comparing Tool bag, to Designer, makes no sense or painter
Now comparing Stager, to Tool bag, makes more sense.... Tool bag is better than Stager, but I have both and used them all, tool bag included...
I have thousands of professional and indie work using Designer, which miles ahead of any thing like it.... The closet thing to Designer possible is the old NDO2, 3do , Mixer..
At the end of the day, buy what you want/need.....
.
Modeler should be available sooner though!
Thanks Jerc for the info on Modeler, and 2023, no rush either way....
HONESTLY CANT WAIT TO TRY OUT MODELER!!
ive waited for a full release so the tools are more stable but it looks amazing... my credit card will be taking a hit next year :D
Thanks for the update, that's exciting to hear at least. I will still insist, if it's possible to put up a preorder page in the store that shows the price prior to January.. that would help for planning.
Thanks either way. Looking forward to painter and sampler myself.
They most are always 149.99$ each program.. my guess it will be the same...
30-50% off in the past for previous versions. but Modeler if I where to guess will be 149.99$ or lower..
