My personal preference was single and double until I unlocked blaster and crossguard respectively. I find crossguard to be as effective as double blade for defensive purposes but easier to manage in close combat, and I prefer the mobility granted by the single and blaster stances. I find blaster to offer a similar experience to single blade but with additional options, so in my mind it's pretty close to a strict upgrade over single blade as long as you're actually using both stances to handle combat scenarios that one or the other is better suited to. I never wanted single blade instead of blaster, but I did want double or crossguard for a more sturdy defense (and in the case of crossguard, heavy and consistent damage output against heavier enemies). I never found a good use for dual blade, I found it to be too defensively weak to want it in most actual combat scenarios, but it would in theory have been useful for a couple of the rifts.
This. OP asked for advice, so I just gave my opinion, but did my best to signal "this is just what I like." Your results may vary.
I believe that there is a "respec skill points" option in the trance menu, but I wouldn't worry about a single skill point, you'll get a lot more to spend. Besides, some stances are better with the skill investment and you won't know if you don't try them out for yourself. ^_^
First of all, I'd strongly suggest switching them around and see which one you like once you get them, and don't really worry about skill points, you'll earn plenty specially if you explore and discover echoes and scans, they give good amounts of XP.
- Single is great and reliable but doesn't excel in anything. You already know this one. It may it may look bland and basic but it's really strong. It has good upgradeable combos, it's fairly quick, average damage, defense and range so well rounded overall.
- Double is for crowd control, obliterates block bars through quick spins but less damage. Also it kinda overcommits to the spins and moves so you're stuck in attack animation and get hit. It's so good, unbeatable at deflecting lasers. You could say is one of the best for when you're roaming around the world, it's really handy.
- Dual IS speed, sooo fast. You can be really aggressive with this one. It has the worst defense and 3/4 the block bar, so yeah bad defense. With dual you have to be really close and personal to the enemy cause it has the worst range of all. Because of this, dual is the only stance that allows you to cancel an attack animation to parry, so that's a HUGE, some say OP advantage to it (if you're a parry player of course, so if you naturally dodge more, you'll have to get used to parrying). It has great quick upgradeable combos. The skill that lets you throw both sabers is really deadly and useful too, gives you a bit of range.
- Blaster has range, lightsaber moves are only one handed so they're kinda weak, linear, like fencing. The blaster is helpful, you shoot basic autoaimed shots pressing Y/△, shoot a charged shot holding it and you reload your mag landing lightsaber attacks or blocking/parrying. It has a great skill that you can unlock, with it you can perfect parry incoming attacks with RT/R2 (can't with empty mag) shooting like a shotgun at point blank range doing great damage and stunning the enemy.
- Crossguard is reeeeally slow, but does huge damage and great range. It's a heavy longsword basically. This is the most different of them all, you HAVE to play to it's strengths. Be patient and defensive, and swing when you see an opening, it can be extremely rewarding if you spend time learning it. It's said to be pretty good against single enemies and bosses.
They're all good, personally I absolutely love how reliable single blade is. Double blade is my second, goated if used well, and the best in crowd control. Those were my go to in my first playthrough tho I'm switching them up for sure in NG+. The others are more focused on each aspect of combat. Then you add in the perk system which is pretty fun, but that's for another time lol
They're all viable and good if you get used to them, so don't give this too much thought and go with the ones you like! Also you'll end up leveling up every stance by endgame anyway.
Hope this helped and sorry if this was too long... I got carried away I love this game :)
ez mode is pewpewpistol.
you have to be precise or Cal continues to swing swords for half a day after you pressed, but if you start with the combos it's a dance, because it involves 4 movements. With the main combo (wait then x again) you close the distance on retreating enemies, and with the last main combo (hold x) if you corner them you shred them. You can do it after every one of the 4 movement (after the last I don't remember...).
Also for reflecting lasers it is a cannon shot: You can defeat lot of enemies only with that, if you have some space.
You can also throw swords one at a time (fast) or two at a time (slow, but really powerful), and make them bounce everywhere: many times it does more damage than intended and attacks enemies you didn't aim, as well as those you did, and prevents them to charge the shots, so it ends up being also a bit defensive, as well as for attack.
The concentrated parry is a little risky, because the advance (on the top tree), when against red moves, the game doesn't like to concede against strong enemies, and sometimes cheats, but overall it's a slow move that works, and sometimes it can be useful! I use it also releasing.
You also have the attack while you have guard: you won't use it as many times as you think, but it can break the game and move a stalemate, it's also a prudent attack and quite fast.
Some times I use the blaster: I think it should be strong, even if I'm not great with that.
I don't know a lot the others, but I saw Cal in videos strong in every way.
However today I killed 2 frogs with my double!
