Jedi Survivor Relationship
So obviously going to explore some deep spoilers for end game in this post so be wars before reading on further as I am inquiring about the end game scenes and conversations.

That said…

-SPOILER-

Through the game we see a relationship develop between Cal and Merrin. I feel like they basically made it “official” at the camp fire on Jeda where they essentially say they love each other more or less.

At the very end of the game they seem good and I don’t see any major issues form between them before the end of the game. However after the game ends and you watch the end cutscene and you are able to fly around again I stopped off by a planet and talked to Merrin to which Cal states…

“I can’t go back to the way things were with us” to which Merrin replies “Nor can I, but things are not so simple now”

To me this sounds like something two people say to each other whenever something happens between them that causes them to split from each other but still need to remain in one another’s space. It almost gives the vibe like they aren’t so sure with one another anymore.

But I didn’t see anything before this that would have caused them to ultimately take a step back or break it off. Is it just weird writing or do others get positive vibes from this conversation?

I guess it would make sense for them to say because now that they are serious with one another things won’t ever be the same between them and they now have this new adopted daughter so to speak.

I just really enjoyed their relationship as it developed and I want to see it continue to grow in the third game. Though now I’m worried that Cal will hurt or kill Merrin as happens often with those tapping into the dark side of the force.

What do y’all think about their relationship, did you enjoy seeing it fleshed out a little more in the game? Do you think they are on the rocks or do you think they are stronger than ever? Would love to get some more opinions on this.

Thats what I am worried about as well ;( I feel like they are gonna have Cal go deeper into the dark side and part of that is going to be Merrin getting killed OR he accidentally hurts or kills her in one of his rages.

Either way I am not emotionally ready for that even if the game is 5 years away xD

I can't wait to see Cal accept the dark side. Jedi and resistance look like a bunch of partisan and street beggars. Strong with the dark side.

I know these games are canon but I think it would be a fantastic opportunity for them to add a system where the player gets to choose to play as dark side or light side with choices and offer two endings to the game. Obviously they could pick one to be canon but it would be fun to let us choose how to play if we wanna go dark side or light side

I think they call that "pulling an Anakin"

Wasn't it revealed in the Clone Wars series that Obi-Wan at one point had a serious relationship with the Duchess of Mandalore?

I might be mistaken but i think i recall something how he said when he was a padawn he was considering giving up on the order and being a jedi for his feeling for her or something on those lines. But im not 100% sure more like 70 or 80% sure.

Well, it was more of an attraction, which she also shared, but he decided to stick with the order, but he admitted that if she asked him to leave the order to be her, he would have instantly said yes.

Even Ashoka Tano had a little crush on a boy in the series, though nothing came of it.

I guess Merrin will be killed in the third game and he will become Anakin 2 or he will become a Sith and Merrin kills him at the end.

There's a lot stacked against them having a traditional and/or healthy relationship:
Fighting the Empire
Helping the Hidden Path
Cal's struggle with the Dark Side
Both of them are also very independent
Shared trauma over what they had to do to secure Tanalor

The last one they even discuss near the end of the game, that they may have to carry the burden of their actions for the rest of their lives.

It's also one thing for a Jedi to strike down an enemy in the middle of a fight, but he killed in cold blood out of anger over Merrin being nearly killed right in front of him. The anger and following shock of what he'd done was all over his face. Merrin was able to pull him back the first time he wanted to kill a defenseless foe, but not the second time.

The story put a lot of characters on unavoidable paths, but not having a choice doesn't make the consequences any easier to deal with.

To me this sounds like something two people say to each other whenever something happens between them that causes them to split from each other but still need to remain in one another’s space. It almost gives the vibe like they aren’t so sure with one another anymore.

My read on this was that it refers to going back to the way things were in fallen order as friends although written a bit weirdly. There are a couple of reasons with;
1. Merrins response follow on response being 'we shall figure it out together" hardly
something one would say to one after a break up.
2. Most of the trauma they have suffered seems to be an important contributor to each
others draw to each other as they rely on each other for a support system
3. Things are more complex now as merrin pointed out in your statement re Kata as they
are now her surrogate parents so they need to care for her in addition to each other
(children do complicate relationships). So they are trying to figure out how to
incorporate that change.
4. Later their conversions have some flirtatious elements where they talk about taking
down the star destroyer being 'a date'. Hardly something one says when going
through a split.
5. Also its highly unlikely the devs would build up the relationship and then do such a
drastic shift after the ending in a single side optional conversation and not bring it up
in any further conversations.

In summary, despite written weirdly I understand it as Cal saying "I dont want to lose you" with Merrin following up with "I don't either but there are some things we need to move forward with together"

That makes a lot of sense. Since I posted this I have played a bit more of it and I have seen some of the side dialogue when on Jeda and they seem to be good and happy relatively speaking xD
I really enjoy that the devs added in some additional content and voice lines for all the characters on all the different locations so its nice to see.

But yeah it was weird writing! Thanks for the input / observation!
