I did. ain't giving spoilers, but it was obvious from the start to me...
Merrin only accompanies you in certain areas of the third planet you visit, especially the open areas in the middle of the map. Some of the enemies in those areas are scaled for dual combat, I think. She also has a small part in certain critical, late-game encounters.
When you're on the second planet - which serves more or less as the hub world, and where the bulk of the exploration takes place - Cal is on his own except during another critical late-game mission, when Bode helps out.
Yeah I haven't gotten far enough to find out, but i have pegged him for a traitor almost immediately.
