Have you tried the steam FPS counter? Steam settings> in-game and the FPS counter should be on, just pick the side you want it on.

that won't work if they don't have the game on steam

You can use a non syeam game and use the steam counter as well you just have to add it.

get rid of afterburner and use rtss

So I setup rtss and added the exe file. now how do I turn on the fps counter through rtss?
