It's hard to do optimization to Unreal Engine. Our technical director rewrote 80% of the ground codes in order to make it run properly on consoles. It's not the Engine is bad, but it's an Engine aiming to able to create any kind of games on it and in the end there will be 80% of the codes doesn't fit your need and if don't do anything about it, your game is going to run poorly and that's what happened here.

I cant remember the last UE4 game I played that didn't have trash performance.

UE4 is not great, but UE5 is incredible. I can’t believe that they didn’t switch over to UE5 during development. It would have evaded most of the current issues.

Try the Layers of fear demo, non-open world UE5 game, but has horrible traversal stutters.
this is not even funny anymore. this Useless Engine.

ue4 was great for it's time - but it's time is up.

Digital Foundry goes over a lot of this stuff.

It isn't the engine, UE4 works great with many other titles. This game should have been built on Unreal Engine 5 instead of 4 though, but that likely would have added at least a year to development time, when EA is your publisher you don't get that option.

Days gone suffered from a lot of hitches when released on Steam. Which was eventually patched.

It seems when you give developers almost a decade of development time for a game like dead island 2. It really helps optimize the game. Thats why it runs so well. :steammocking:

Giving a game barely 3 years of time to release really isnt smart. As we can see here for this game with all the issues on release.

So with that said. UE doesnt suck. Only is bad when studios get no time at all to optimize or test the game fully.

Lastly, UE is always over hyped. Than when games actually use it it looks nothing like how they said it would. I guess if the game is good though looks dont really matter.

upgrade your potato
Street Fighter V, Gears of War 4, Gears 5, and other titles run fine with Unreal Engine 4, especially Mortal Kombat 1 that'll be utilizing UE4.

I've never been a fan of Unreal Engine ever since they had a massive Intel and NV bias in their older engines. The game TERA was one of the worst optimized games I have ever seen, and after that I avoid UE games like the plague.

The problem is when I get free keys from LinkedIn and elsewhere, the games almost always happen to be UE games.

Look at Gollum. I told you guys the year would be long! Another game with bad optimization, and that was only one key. I have 19 more in my messages...

Get ready, 2023 is just starting :steamhappy:

Unreal Engine has been around for decades and has never, at any point in history, been the best game engine.

When I was a kid (more then 20years ago) I used to design with Sauerbrauten deathmatch arenas for online games or single environments for off-line videogames, and I remember that, with the other game engines, more complex and maybe even better of the really easy to use Sauerbrauten, Unreal Engine wasn't even considered by early nobody: this is only experience, not a technical judge, but... that's the way it really went.

However, my opinion is that despite the limitations that Unreal has been carrying around for so long that I fear are structural, here the problems are about optimization, because crashes and issues are too gross to be attributed to a game engine of our times.

Thanks for the heads up on the Layers of Fear demo. It ran great. 90-120 fps, maxed out with RT on at 1440p. Or I can run it at 4k with DLSS on and get 85-100fps with a much cleaner image than native 1440p. It has one-time, half-second stutters on transitions, but that was it. It was perfectly smooth otherwise. Not bad for a demo. You just convinced me to buy the game. Nice!

To really hammer your point home, the game isn't even using UE5 natively. It's still partially UE4.

Hey man, you can't win them all. It's okay.

Yup, a corridor game with those LOD pops galore and low-poly assets, you still get traversal stutters here and there. yes, I know it is 5.1, but at this point I don't have any faith in UE game and western game dev any more.
