If you want to catch up on the story just YouTube the full fallen order story, still plenty of time till this releases to watch just the story.
I played the first game, and the story is cookie cutter vanilla Disney nonsense that I already forgot. All you need to really know is that Cal Kestis is a Jedi Knight, and you are in the time period after the Republic fell and the Empire took over.
You really don't need to play the first game unless you really want to.
It's not a game with massive lore that you need to play.
Most of the first game revolves around uninteresting events that make Cal stronger as a Jedi and which you don't need to remember (I already forgot everything).
That'll probably get you up to speed.
Unless it refers to something else, which seems unlikely.
I do love it when devs do a recap video in the main menu :)
The game being a sequel you'll miss on a lot by not playing the previous one.
So yes, you should play the previous one.
I would have recommended you played the first one if the story was really needed and compelling, but really, it's 20-30 hours of going planet to planet to only get stronger, and lots of what you actually do doesn't serve as plot points for the second game. Also, the main villain from the first game is defeated in the first game, so the second game is a brand new story. They clearly intended this game for people that also never played the first one.
And I imagine in the future third game (I bet my right hand this will be a trilogy), it will be the same thing. These are really self contained episodes.
