8 GB VRAM really minimum?
Hi, just a fix question:
In the store page (EA and here) the minimum Graphics VRAM should be 8GB. Is this really so? So if its less, then its unplayable? Appreciate reviews and experience here

8GB minimum, and that is for 1080p. What will happen if you have less depends on your GPU, driver version, and game version.

What you might have happen are the following:

1. Game won't run (but it might not run for other reasons)
2. Texture pop in / flickering when VRAM is full
3. Certain area where lots of VRAM is moved will cause stuttering
4. Game crash or give "out of memory message" / BSOD

It may run, but it will run subpar and you may have some graphical errors. The issue is this game has issues running even on hardware in-spec or exceeding it, so that means you can expect some issues...

At 1080p there are sections of the game where 8GB is adequate but 5-6GB of data is moving in and out of VRAM. I would assume that this game needs at least 6GB of VRAM to actually run (how poorly is unknown).

[can't say more to give you false hope since you will likely not understand what I mean to implement a patch that can reduce VRAM req.]

This crap requires 8 gbs?!

The game recommends it because it's being optimized with 8GB in mind. That means at any point cards with less than 8GB can experience issues and the devs won't help.

The game needs a literal unlimited supply of VRAM with the memory leaks that haven't been fixed in two months

Safe to say at this point that anything developed for the PS5 will need more than 8GB to run well.

8GB VRAM is both the minimum and recommended, but the RAM goes from 8GB minimum to 16GB recommended. The PS5 has a shared pool of 16GB across both. So whatever they're doing is going beyond PS5 specs.

But it looks like crap, it doesn't even look that good. I ran Doom Eternal on far far less and it was smooth while performing more than this game. The industry really is dead any more.

I think it's a great looking game, so can't help ya there. Doom Eternal is definitely a marvel of engine technology though, for sure. It's not as open world though.

Thx!
If you have more information, do not hesitate, I actually understand something :-D

You can increase your page file (min amount) or ram to compensate in terms of less crashing or none at all, but still have stutters. Basically get enough shared vram, 50% of ram is used for vram. Though the sharing is only from actual ram, page file though helps when not having just enough ram.

Example I have rtx 2070 8GB = 8GB dedicated gpu memory.
48GB ram = 24GB shared gpu memory.
Both together is 32GB gpu memory.
(had before 16GB ram, pretty much no performance gain, but at least don't need to rely on ssd being used as ram)

There is pretty much no difference what settings I use for the game when running @1080p, besides raytracing and epic foliage.

If you have 6GB and don't mind 45fps that's an option if you lock it via vid card settings and use adaptive vsync (it's what I did), but yea without 8GB it's impossible to maintain 60fps, even at 1080p

You know what looks WAY better than this game, and has far more detail and doesn't need 8GB for 1080p?
Watch_Dogs: Legion. And that game in any given shot has a lot more going on in terms of shading, lighting, transparencies, and AA.
Maybe you should learn and not be ignorant; you'd find that 8GB is ludicrous for 1080p.
Even Cyberpunk 2077 uses less resources than this game, and again has far more detail, shadows, etc. in any given scene.
This game is hot optimized garbage and i'm not sure why you are defending it.

Dude you are talking about a game that's 3 years old compare to recent game's this Is how I know you a joke. Please answer be back with a game that AAA 2022-2023 then we can see.

:steamfacepalm:
You really don't understand graphics technology at all do you?
The ambient occlusion alone is superior in WD:L.
I'm not going to sit here and walk you through all the reasons why this game should not be using as much power as it is.
You clearly want to suck the ♥♥♥♥ of your favorite youtuber (it's the only reason I can think of why you would defend this game at all, because your favorite tuber did, when literally everyone who knows wtf they are talking about says this game is terribly optimized) and argue with someone who has been building computers longer than that youtuber has been alive.

Every single one of those came out this year, and none of them require 8GB of VRAM for 1080p.
Take your ball and go home kid, you lost.
