Plenty of knights historically had no land of their own (indeed, many were household knights) and being a bastard was no barrier in many cultures (it was for inheritance, but being a knight is different from inheriting a title + the related privileges.).
There is no benefit to knighting him only complication. Sentiment wouldn't enter into it. If he were knighted, oaths of obligation go both ways. He's also apparently happy enough to hang around like a puppy anyway, so more strings aren't required.
