Do you HAVE to craft a horseshoe in "For Whom the Bell Tolls"?
The crafting mechanics are just as janky as it gets, especially when you can't control where the hammer lands and you're chasing it around with the horseshoe missing 80% of your swings because you have to rely on good RNG. Like this isn't even fun, it's frustrating and probably the most tedious thing I've ever been expected to do by a developer in their game. It says it's optional, but I'm confused now as to what I'm even supposed to be doing in this quest for real.

Hans is going to die in my play-through, there's no question about that and if he does I'm probably uninstalling the game to make room for Avowed sooner than later because my actual life and job are already stressful enough, I don't need this kind of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ in my down time. Am I supposed to be finding a way to get in there and save Hans? Am I supposed to be working off my time? Am I supposed to be trying to escape? It's stressing me out that I don't know what I'm supposed to be doing and this damn bell keeps tolling to let me know the clock's ticking. Sorry if this comes off as a rant, it's not that, I'm just stressed the heck out right now with this game especially since I already have over 80 hours in it and I don't want to give up on it after all the time I've already put into it. Like what am I supposed to be doing for real right now during this quest?

u move the hammer with the mouse.
it's not rng.
could it be that ur mouse is broken?
no, you can skip that. But crafting a horseshoe is not rng, its you aiming. Since those dont have quality, you dont have to be as precise. If you know where to go etc, you can finish the quest by the 2nd/3rd bell.

I use a controller
Same applies, move the hammer, hit once, see where it goes, adjust from there. It really isn´t rocketscience

if you can't aim while striking you can always pre-aim it, you'll just have to do more strikes and re-heat it more

also, if you wear the blacksmith's apron and leather gloves your blacksmithing skill goes up by i think at least 5 points so that will make it easier as well
Can't control the hammer? What?

So basically once again, just go ahead and look up a walk-through so someone else can play the game for me... Yeah, yeah alright. With 80 hours already I might as well. I just don't see myself finishing this game if every quest is as stressful, confusing and even timed like this one. I have too much going on to get stressed out about a video game. hehe

WTF are you doing ? Even an idiot like me manages to do it
Put the hammer on the horseshoe with mouse, then click to power, wait like 2 sec, click again to strike, move the hammer a bit, repeat

Playing on a controller is different. I can't sit at my desk for too long because of a permanent injury and chronic pain so I have to use a controller and lay on my couch. Using a controller in this game is horrible vs keyboard and mouse, but I don't have much of a choice.

You dont even have to carry a single sack in that quest. Which is one of the things i love about this game, some quests dont have 1 solution to it, there are several ways to get your goal. Ill add a spoiler filter but ill explain how i did that quest, after some experimenting and failing a few times.
First thing i did was stealth and throw a rock to get past the guard at the inner gate. Then i took a left and got into the tower, stealthed up the stairs, until i got to the staircase guarded by a single guard, i threw another stone to distract him and stealthed past him and continued climbing up the tower. When you get to the top you find captain Thomas lying in bed with his sister sitting beside him. You talk to her she tells you he needs medicine. Then you stealth back down, have to distract the guard at the bottom of the stairs again to get past.

Move along the top part of the walls, make sure to time it so you dont run into one of the guards, theres 1 guard on either side patrolling. Stealth up to the alchemy bench in that tower, talk to Catherine, if you have decent charisma she can help you, if not you have to help yourself. Loot the book on the shelf to the left in the room, read it to learn the alchemy recipe for fever concoction, lockpick the chest to loot all the herbs you need, sadly i dont remember where i got the lockpick from, but it was from one of the unlocked chests in Trosky. Craft a fever concoction and stealth your way back to captain Thomas, give him the medicine and you have completed the quest, and Hans is saved

Chill and take it slow. We are so used to games that leads us all the time, so i kinda like it to try and figure it by myself, but if i cant and im getting stressed i looked it up. Just push through it, its worth it! Btw the horseshoe also gave me trouble, but i tried it until i know how it works. im on controller.

Can't you use wireless KB/M ? I admit the game may be janky on a controller

Not really, because I have to sit up in a similar position on my couch to comfortably use a wireless keyboard and mouse. I think what happens is sitting on anything puts pressure on the back of my thigh cutting off enough circulation to trigger the old injury in my toe to cause my whole foot to start swelling and hurt a lot more than you might think. I ended up just getting a hot bucket of water though and leaving my foot in it while I played on mouse and key board which actually worked.

I was able to play through this whole quest at my desk with keyboard and mouse to finally finish it but I was so stressed I was going to have to reload a save back at the wedding if I didn't figure everything out in time. I had 10 savior schnapps too but it wouldn't let me use them in that quest. I was able to craft the horse shoe easily too on my first try with the mouse, it felt so much better, so yeah controller is just really janky for everything from blacksmithing to combat. Like REALLY janky compared to keyboard and mouse.
