On the second map... I didn't need his charisma buff nor help during combat, plus he was sabotaging my sneakage so I sent him to remain at Den.
Just asking
Same feeling, compared to KCD he is no longer fun. Way too much time is spent keeping him happy. His food needs exceed mine, by a lot, and I don't even have the food perk. Does not eat dried meats. NPC reaction to him is inconstant and annoying as well: "Oh what a good dog.". Same NPC, at the end of a dialog: "Bad Dog, get out of here."
For me he is buggy too, first he had no Praise, now he has Praise bu the Hunt option is gone (yes, I have the perk, yes I used to have the Hunt option). I tried to park him at the Inn for a few days, but that did not fix anything.
Time to send him home.
Outside of towns I keep him free unless I'm going stealth. When I see hostiles I get to a medium distance and tell him to stay (about the distance you stop at for encounters further away when fast travelling, not the Ride Up distance). I then go stealth and murderize everything. If I stuff things up I immediately whistle for Mutt as combat starts. Mutt then comes to help tank vs multiple opponents.
