Do I need to play the first game?
Kingdom Come: Deliverance II seems like a fun game, but I haven't played the 1st one, do I need to play the 1st one in order to understand the story of the 2nd game?

Also how different are the 2 games, if they are similar I'll definitely buy the 1st one, if the 2nd one is a big improvement then I'll just get the 2nd game.

I would say it very much helps but just watch a 10 minute story recap on YouTube and you’ll be good to go
You definitely should.

I really don't see the benefit of only playing KCD2, relatively skipping to it - it still works of course but there's not much point.

I think the biggest difference is - speedtree :D - no joke, the trees look awesome.

Aside from that, it's pretty much the same engine really.

Skipping KCD1 would be a bad idea in my opinion.
There's just too much story and character development involved.
And it's not like it's outdated or anything, or something like "Man in order to understand Like a Dragon IW you have to play the prior 9 games first"

Bottom line, the games are really very similar besides a few bits and bobs so play the first one.

There are various flashbacks, but in general I would advise to at least watch a summary.
I really think you should play the first one, and not rush through but take your time with the side quests too (aside from the ones that involve hunting a certain amount of meat and similar) - and, in addition, the Amorous Adventures of Sir Hans Capon DLC is necessary.

I think you can ignore the Tournament, From the Ashes, Treasures of the Past and Band of Bastards DLC's. - Nothing wrong with them, they are all good and absolutely worth playing, but in context of getting into KCD2, don't add anything that you need.

A womans Lot is necessary if your Henry is serious about that character, otherwise, ignore it.

I strongly recommend to play the first game before starting this one.
You should, because the games aren't for everyone and the first one is alot cheaper.
Also, its really, really good.
Also don't let FOMO get you because its a single player game. Waiting until you've played the first one isn't going to result in you missing anything, and by the time you get to the second they'll have added content and fixed bugs.
Its a win win all around tbh.

You don't have to, but I would recommend it because it makes the second one that much more enjoyable.
I haven't played the first game, but I really liked the second game. I don't understand when there is dialogue about the first game, but it's not a big deal. Also, I don't think you'll want to play the second game right after playing the first game for 70 hours.

The real important part of this game is its open world and side missions. The main story is not a masterpiece. :)
