I could give a few reasons why, but when HC mode comes out it won't matter much anyway if it's gonna follow KCD's exploration and travelling formula in Hardcore.
I rarely relied on map markers like crosses but much more on where exactly are you on the map by familiar places and remembering the road.
A henry-tier fox potion (the level above strong) gives +50% xp for the duration, including book xp.
these skillbooks really helped me levelling scholarship:
The building that scribe is in has a level 2 scholarship book, level 2 heavy weapons book and upstairs is a level 2 strength book these are all great scholarship xp they're placed on top of cabinets though so are easily mistaken for decoration, they require stealing to obtain.
There are lots of skillbooks on the first map so depending on what level your scholarship is currently you should easily be able to get the explorer perk before leaving if you so desire.
