Mutt's behavior stays on "Heel"
So long story short, I keep my Mutt on "Free" at all time because if i change it to Heel, he STAYS in Heel (it doesn't matter which behavior he's on none want to switch back) which lowers his obedience quicker and i can't take full advantage of his other attributes like "Search" or alerting key items etc. Only way i can fix this bug is if i just load back to a point where Mutt is "Free". Am i alone in this?

Same problem here. I told him at one point to stay where he was and now il can't set him on "free" mode. I can tell him aigain to stay where he is but that's all. I'm playing in french so I don't know how it is translated in english but when I try to set Mutt "Free", Henry just say something like"search !". It seems like the option to set Mutt free has been replaced by the option to search something. I suppose it is since I unlocked the perk that allow Mutt to search items or locations. I asume it must have added a 4th option to the dog behaviors but it seems to have just replaced one.
Be careful, maybe it is the same for the perk that allow you to tell Mutt to bark on command. I didn't tried yet.
I don't know how to fix that, exept reload before i changed the behavior and never change it again. I hope it will be patched soon.
Sorry if my english was bad, as i sayed, i'm french.
I don't ever take him with me because he stops in front of me while walking, or pushes me around when I'm standing still. Dog is a nuisance, leave it at home.
there are a few quests where you can use his ability to "track" by using items with ppl sent on them.

otherwise is a good distraction at the combat start, might draw aggro for a few seconds , sufficiently for you to create a positional advantage.
once he takes a beating, he runs away for a little bit.

i usually keep him around for that.
He's helpful in combat and sending him at home is quite buggy too. I saw that sometime, depending on where tou send him, you can't get him back.
it's a bug but you can get him in free mode if you manually let him attack someone.
So I have a theory but not sure if I tested it enough. If you are on horseback mutt goes on auto heel. Wont eat, wont attack.
If you issue him commands to free or try to feed him from horseback, I think this is what is sticking him to heel when you get off the horse.
I had to send him home and then call him back to fix it.
I was able to replicate this once

I can comfirm that it is working. Thank you.
For that, you need to find something that Mutt can attack. Bandits or some animals that you can hunt.
This is a somewhat restrictive solution and it's a shame that we have to do that to do something that should so basic. But at least it work and we are not totally stuck.
I simply keep him at the Inn as I find his existence to be distracting if not immersion breaking... Sorry but Mutt should die in the first battle he ends up in... a Mutt would stand little chance against plate armor wearing sword wielding foe's....
Much as a love him, after a couple of hours hoofing it on foot too encumbered to get on my horse, I had to send him home, way too annoying. He constantly runs in across front of me, like every 5-8 seconds, blocking my path. It's only for a literal split second, like slows you down for less than half a second, but it's really f'ing jarring, feels like a frame drop because the scenery you're running through just dead stops while he crosses in front of you blocking your movement for just like 0.2 seconds. This would be bearable every now and then, but it's like he's on a pathfinding loop where he literally just runs in circles around you, blocking you like this every few seconds. You'll see him run past, then turn around and run right back at you into your legs. Sorry Mutt, you gotta go dude.

I didn't tested your theory. Maybe it occurs when your on horse back but I can affirm that it's not just that. I never used dog commands while on horse since the beginning of the game and the bug happend for me anyway.
As for my own case, I rather suspect the perk " Search! " to be responsible of the bug since Henry tell Mutt to search something instead of the usual sentences when I try to set him on free mode. Also I had just unlocked the perk before the bug occured.
Yea but the "Bark!" command is so much fun to troll the town....and get them to come outside so i can steal their keys. I keep around on thief mode henry as a distractor

thank you all for responding and sharing some insight! I'm currently just having mutt on "free" all the time since i like how he spots point of interest and enemy location better than I lol. But yes I do think it started when I selected the search perk and hope that the devs release some bug fixes soon <3
Having exaclty the same problem almost right after reuniting with Mutt. As soon as you command him "To heel", he stucks to that behaviour forever. And I can comfirm that the issue starts to happen after you buy "Search!" perk.

So perhaps the alternative workaround is to never buy that perk until the issue is fixed in the following patches...
Hey, I had the exact same issue, and after trying a few things what worked for me, weirdly, is to use the stay command, use the free command hold X command to call him to me, and pet him and he goes free.

The dog was broken in the first game too. Only thing I found was the mod that locked obedience at 100. Otherwise you'd have to praise and feed him every 20 seconds or he'd start freaking out and running off. I just tried to finish KCD1 but it's still a buggy mess that's barely tolerable with mods. Gonna fire up this thing when it's done downloading... but good to hear it's still a flaming pile of dog crap in the second installment. lol
