But I went on the second map pretty late, was already level 20some, with plate armor and a Reforged sword, abusing Bane poisoned arrows as well...
If you beelined for the main quest in the first map you'll be underleveled and will have to take some time to train and get better equipment if you don't already have the best that can be found.
I would say that if you are good at combat, I mean you personally good at timing hits and managing to do combos then you would probably be fine at around level 20+ and I mean by that not just sword and warfare but also strength, agility and vitality.
But that also depends on your equipment. And as for swords I would say that probably despite the longsword dealing more damage than the shortsword the latter might be better overall just because it's so much faster. It's also the case that in the first map because there was no decent longsword most of us used the shortsword and because of that we got used to the rhythm of it. Longsword is more powerful and has more range but is slower so some muscle memory might need to be re-learned.
