I'm new to mods...what happens to mods during an update?
I have mods that adjust time scale, food values and tweak the UI (one minimizes the compass and another adds transparency). I also have a mod that adds a new potion type (nighthawk cleanser).

Should I turn off these mods until they make new versions or should they be OK? I'm particularly concerned with the compass minimizing mod as I'll be restarting in hardcore mode and it's supposed to affect the compass.

TL,DR: Your suggestions and insight into how updates affect mods and what I should do about them would be appreciated.

usually mods break after an update and you have to wait till the mod authors fix their respective mods

can't accurately say, some mods won't work at all, some mods can potentially break the game and even cause crashes and save corruption, some mods will work just as they did prior to update, it's a toss up

it's why i usually do backup saves before applying mods

I see. Let me ask, will Steam allow me to turn off automatic updates and play old versions until the mods get updated? It's too late for this one as it has already updated but in the future I'd like to do that. Also I've been waiting for hardcore mode so I really want to play that right away anyway. I don't have to worry about corrupting my existing saves though since hardcore mode requires a new playthrough. Otherwise I'll hope for the best!

Thank you space!

no, afaik that's not an option if you launch it through steam, but if the game is drm free then you can launch it through the exe

Mods will often break when a mod is released, you have to wait for the author to update it.

most kcd 2 mods are PTF which means that they are more likely not to break after a patch.

Really? That's too bad. I don't know why but I always assumed I could turn off auto-updates. I wonder why they don't have that option. It seems like it would be useful for mods and other reasons.

What does PTF mean?

So if I can't prevent automatic updates then game updates are going to be something to be feared for a game I'm actively playing. :( I'm really upset to read I can't turn off auto-updates.
Ptf means patched table files.. idk much what it meant though.. but after an update if your mod are mostly like mine (ptf) it either won't work or they work just fine. There're probably some mod that would break the game if the mod alters animation when the update also alters animation such as rebalanced combat speed which doesn't work well post patch 1.2.
Well for now just try using your old mod and wait if there's any update from the author.
And sadly steam version auto updates can't be turn off

PFT means it only edits the lines that needs to be edited. It doesn't replace the entire file. So a mod that alters the value of apples is also compatible with a mod that alters the value of bread. And they are compatible with a mod that adds swords.
(because items are stored in the same file)

Item editing mods can easily break an update. It depends on the mod. But those mods that make food not get stale at least were once bad choices. (there is a perk for this in the game)
Most modern mods try to do that now not through editing the food itself in the item file but through a perk that is given to the player. That will stay working.

Well...and mods are only working if they don't have an entry in the manifest file to be made for a specific game version. then they won't be loaded when the game is newer than the game version. Most mods I use now stay away from this entry.
