It's on my shortlist of all time best rpgs.

ya but did you play KCD1?

Nothing I saw in KCD2 was any better than KCD1, and to me (500 hours of KCD) a lot of it seemed abjectly worse

yeah not gonna lie - the original was a masterpiece, but not because it was a gold standard in anything particularly, except the overall package.

The sequel seems far from being anything yet.

There is only one game I can think of that is better than KCD and that might be Subnautica. Days Gone is also up there, but probably i would edge KCD over it very slightly.

KCD 2 from what I could see in my 116 minutes before I refunded is just a camp parody of KCD1. I binned it damn quick because I didn't like at all how it was shaping up. From what I heard from people that stuck with it, it takes all the elements that made KCD1 great and then makes them ever so slightly worse, along with annoying over used dialogue choices.
Completely bad take. It improves on every single aspect of the first game and if you only played 2 hours, you haven't even seen enough to make this judgement. The reality is that this game is not friendly for the refund window, but it IS a masterpiece.

fair comment. I have said I might rebuy when hardcore comes out. I definitely want to wait at least for that.

It is NOT.

Now it's your turn to come back with "It IS"

It's honestly a buggy mess. And some of the quests are poorly designed.

I also dislike how the story forces you into situations regardless of your dialogue choices. You can't talk your way out of any of the numerous tavern/wedding fights that get you into trouble.
You are reduced to nothing by the ambush, have a satisfying recovery arc with the herbwoman, but then immediately get forced into a brawl and reduced to zero again.. and then again at the wedding..!!

Nevermind the tavern brawl with the Cumans, no matter how much to try to de-escalate.
Then I visit their camp wanting to poison/stealth kill them, but you can't because they never sleep.. because the game demands that you drink with them.

The story was way better. So were the controls. I preferred holding B to sprint.
In KCD2 I always randomly stop sprinting/galloping because the thumbstick is so sensitive/finnicky.

Oh I play on m+k. It feels alot more fluid to me. And I am enjoying the story alot more in KCD2. Both are good though.

Both good games. But the bugs in KCD2 are hurting my opinion of it.
I was late to pick up KCD1, so I think by that point most of the bugs had been smoothed out.

Yep. The dlss additions did wonders to performance also.

Fallout 1. 2. NV, Arcanum and Skyrim (mostly due to the modding community) are the gold standards in RPGs for me. KCD series just isn't that great. I'm pretty much 50/50 on refunded this one due to lack of options to actually roleplay. I want to roleplay as a medieval savage and I can't delete gheys and mouth Sub Saharans? Nah. Not even sure I want to wait for mods out of principle.

Lol. Just refund and move on. Sounds like you've barely even played it.

I like this game but it's a buggy mess and I don't think how it's laid out should be the blueprint for open world games moving forward
