smithing high quality swords is infuriating
I've been trying to smith a level 4 dueling longsword for who knows how long but i just cant do it. i have 30 levels in smithing but one single bad hit seems to ruin it and some parts of the sword are "bad zones" from the very start so the only way to know when you are getting near a bad zone is to listen to the hits of the hammer gradually getting worse which is hard to do because of HENRYS ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ WHISTELING.

Might be a stupid question, but do you have the perk?

I follow the basic tips & have managed to make a tier 4 long sword first try. There's no bad area to hit unless you're repeatedly hitting the same location. Just move it up a little bit each time from one end to the other & remember to flip it over. Avoid waiting for it to cool down & so long as you get the rythm going a bit (like 50-60%) then it should work. My smithing skill was like 16 when I made the tier 4 sword.

I do agree that the whistling is annoying & I'm kind of done with the smithing for now.

The wistling Helps you you Amateur. You need to have a Rythm when you work on a Weapon. You also need to heat it correctly so it glows yellow and then Hammer it where the Sparks fly aka just keep moving the Mouse a bit each time. When its getting Orange you need to Heat it again.
I know the basic tips for smithing. Keeping the sword heated, not hitting the same area repeatedly, listening for the highpitched clang and watching for the sparks. I've made 4th level longswords before and attempted to smith the dueling longsword several times where henry has not said anything other than "This'll take a while longer" or "It's halfway done". Yet the best level i get is 3.

Looks like it might be a bug. Found a solution on Reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/kingdomcome/comments/1inuy9h/comment/mceaxid/ if you store one in your storage chest it should work to forge a second one. Very strange and this worked for me so can confirm after many multiple attempts.
If you "miss" your hammer and don't get any sparks that counts as a miss and will reduce the quality. Use small or medium power swings as you are moving down the sword to keep the speed up.
It makes it easier with Henry’s whistling. His whistling means you are doing it right

Take your time heating up the sword evenly, get it to a light red glow then move to the next part so they heat relatively equally. Don't use force in the hammer blows, you want him to whistle the faster tune, basically as soon as the hammer is fully raised drop it. Give it one series of hits bottom to top, then top to bottom, flip over and repeat. Should be done without having to re-heat.
