Can't reach Level 4 smithwork
My Craftsmanship is at (buffed) 29, I have the Martin's Secret perk, but no matter how lwttwer-perfect my forging, all I can achieve is Level III,
Or is it that only some elite plans can be forged up to IV?

You just be doing something wrong.
My crafting is crap and I'm bad at timing with blacksmithing yet I got level 4 first try.
Don't overheat the steel, don't keep hammering if it starts going red, don't hit the same spot, work down the piece then flip it, over and over, try to keep him whistling. That's all I can advise

yeah getting level 4 just means not making mistakes, take as long as you want but as long as you don't overheat, hammer it while cold, or hammer the same spot over and over, itll be level 4

I got it in two tries. And it was a common longsword, so you absolutely do not need elite plans.
Ive made half a dozen different swords and axes since getting the perk and they have all turned out lvl 4. Like others have said, just try to limit your mistakes and get in a rhythm to keep Henry whistling as much as possible. I make sure to flip the piece over whenever my stamina gets low, so that may help.

Did you find the long sword disappears under the anvil? It makes it awkward

Was anyone able to master smith a duelling longsword ? I found that I just can't forge it to a master level, no issues with any other (except quest) weapons.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Are you using heavy blows or light taps? I can't keep a rhtyhm except with light ones

I do a full power blow but try to keep it timed. I mess up a bit but everything is still fine

so far only quest items cant go to lvl 4 for me , if you find smithing really hard or tedius there is a mod on nexus to make it more easy . Plus there is a mod that makes quest weapons be able to reach master status , usually cap is 3 like henrys fathers sword

Yes, that was my problem - I did not use strong strikes with a hammer, and before it was enough. For the best weapons - you need to hit hard.

i think theres a bug in the result window , itll show as a quality 3 but if you check your inventory , its a masterwork
I was having trouble until I watched a YouTube video on it. Quality isn’t based on hitting equally on both sides or how hard you hit it.

It’s based solely on how long Henry whistles for. In order to get a level-4 longsword, make sure Henry whistles the entire song all the way through. Don’t bother flipping the sword over.

Interesting. I'll try that. I have only been able to forge one lv.4 item so far.

Heavy blows, you don't need a rhytm.

That's a bug peculiar to the smithy at Devil's Den. I just work elsewhere
