Criminality system for stealing is bad
No witnesses. No one spotted you.

Yet enjoy your bounty because the game magically knows you took something.

Seriously, did they put any effort into this?

its a great system if it 100% worked. i snuck into town. from the wood line. about 4 mins in game away. killed the gaurd. stole a document. hid the guard on the way out. still got called a thief but not a murderer. done it all starting at like 1 am till 3 am
A system can be great even if it only 90% works.
I think people just got use to being able to steal something from a counter when the merchant looked away and him not noticing it gone from there, and now you're wearing it. ;)

it's definetly broken, i stole a bunch of things today without anyone even being close to seeing me and had to skip town, it happened before on the first region and i thought i was careless

Yeah, there's definitely something funky going on.

I ran to Troskowitz, no dog, no horse, in the dark, wearing all black, from Semine avoiding the roads, saw no one, no one saw me. Stole a key, got into the Rathaus, stole the ledger thing, got out without incident. Ran back to Semine, went to sleep. got a notification when Henry woke up stating that he's a wanted man.
Yup, about the same happen to me.

Yeah, you think you weren't seen but the guard who was leaning against a tree 20m off the street when you entered town and the old man who came out of his house just as you passed it know better. ;)
They may not have seen you steal but they can do math. LOL

But it clearly is a problem. I just murdered one of the guards(charged at him with my sword) while 2 other guards were around at night, and nobody cared. Then I passed time and nothing, nobody saw me. No crime. On the other hand I stole some things while nobody saw me, came back in the village after a day and I'm a thief. You can believe it's a perfect system as long as you want. But it's not. It's very buggy.

"OMG, do you have a hunting sword?!? Only 500 people in this 501 person village have one, you must have stolen it!!!"

It IS stupid. You steal something from the 3rd floor, go down to the first floor, they recognize that you stole a thing from them. And not only that, they also know what you stole 3 villages further away. Because don't you know - you can clearly recognize a piece of chicken being from a particular tavern. Same with apples - where else would you find one?!
Nah. What's stupid is to expect NPCs to be stupid.
There always gonna be things that don't make sense, because it's a video game. Also the more complex a system is, more bugs and randomness it will have because of many "moving parts" in the mechanism.
But complex NPCs that are difficult to fool are always better than dumb ones

Perhaps, but they shouldn't be omniscient and simply know it was you regardless of how flawless you were.

Or maybe the players are just careless? Also sounds very likely. I have never been caught in this game stealing and I did that a lot early game.

If you commit any other crime like trespassing then the guard also searches your pockets so the stealing charge can compound on top.

Skill issue. You have to know how to do crime properly. Never be seen around the crime area on the same day. Bring stolen items to your chest as soon as possible and keep them there until the "stolen" status goes away. Always move to another village after committing a crime and don't return there for at least a day. If stopped by a guard, you have to talk your way out, pay or reload, you can't just run.

There are a few janky things, like for some reason taking things from a bandit camp you just cleared is treated as stealing. But once you know the quirks of the system, it's easy to get around it.

Good advice, let's hope some of the players here read this, try it and stop seething needlessly.

why go to all that trouble ?
i mean why hoard so much money ?
the best weapons ... you make them yourself
the best armor ... you can find it
the best potions ... you make them yourself
the only costs you have are for repair / repair sets
what you find at bandits is more than enough to cover all the costs you have in the game

I knocked down the whole camp with stealth in the middle of the night, didn't get spotted or had the hare icon below the compass, didn't steal anything besides the sausages for quest in Kuttenberg. Fast traveled back to the middle of the city to save in the inn that I've rented for a couple of days, but got halted by guards for theft.

There's also this quest where a random knight wants a certain sword and I had to forge a replica. Upon showing it to him he says he's keeping it and I'm dead. I killed him and when i picked up my sword it's tagged as stolen.

So I think the complaints about the criminality system is valid.

I have noticed this with towns that are angry with me.

I was doing blacksmithing in Troskowitz in the middle of the night. One of the guards came up to me about 2 swords into my work and said that there was no loitering allowed and that i'm required to have a torch on.

I was able to talk my way out of it, but i still lost reputation.

This actually happen to me in Semine. I was in Tachov all day trying to steal the Maypole and never been close to Semine for a week now from doing quest and I decided to steal stuff in the Semine keep. I knockout all the guards without anyone noticing and I was long gone after back in Zhelejov at 4 depositing the loots and then tada check map at 5 sharp I got a bounty even though none of them saw me. Maybe should had just assassinate the guards next time and see if that would work. They definitely didn’t saw me thou as I was chocking them to unconsciousness nor any civilians saw me loitering around the area nor my horse as J park it way in the forest. It’s frustrating tbh.
