They're many perks that buff Short Swords. I prefer SS due to attack speed / faster reposites and master strikes. You can cleave through enemies easier.

Considering all the one handed buff 10% damage perks right now. SS do more damage than longswords.
Depends on you.

Just on stats? Longswords (2h) are the best stat weapons.

1h are mostly faster, can be paired with a Shield (2h only with a perk and a hefty 20% dmg reduce, higher stam cost etc.).

So... pick your weapon. Try both.
depends on your skills, your armour, and what you prefer in a weapon, so its rather subjective. do you prefer to have some range and still have a reasonably fast weapon? take the longsword. want speed and versatility by using a torch or a shield in the off hand? take the one handed sword.
that being said, in theory there is a perk on the strength tree that actually enables you to use your two handed longswords with one hand and still use a shield or torch, but it comes with the downside of slower hits and more stamina need.

I mainly use polearms, so I take a hunting sword for the second slot, so I can carry a torch in the other hand without the need of the one hand longsword perk for fight in the dark.

Also, like mentioned above, one hand swords have few few really good perks themselfes and that makes them at least equal or even better and hunting swords have also a good blunt damage on them, which is why I take them in this game.
eventually you can wield long-swords with shields. But heavy weapons for the armour guys, blades for the cloth boys. nothin like hearing that *thunk* to their melon with a hammer.

1H has another dmg perk in the Theving Skill as well, kinda busted ngl
Depends on what perk setup you like. In the sword skill tree there are perks exclusive for sabers, hunting swords, short swords and long swords.

Also longswords are two handed so it is only sword category that cannot use shields or a torch without investing extra perk (and having debuff with the perk).

I dont use shields becuase it blocks too much vision for my taste but it is solid protection if you struggle in harder fights. The torch however, fighting in darkness sucks beucase enemies are not affected yet you are so torch is a must. (or a potion tho I still dont understand why we have literally witcher cat potion to see in the dark)

personaly i use the longsword.
i realy dont want to carry the heavy shilds with me ^^
For some reason, 2H swords don't have as many perks as 1H swords. So 1H swords are better at the moment. You can use it with a shield and have an easy time fighting against groups, or you can use it without anything and get sweet perks.

2H swords are still good if you don't have perks (they're in a different skill tree) or for easy mode with poisons (one shot almost all enemies). They are also good for master strikes, so you can do more damage with each master strike.

It is explained in the game how it would make sense (at least in the first game).
The the ingredients in this potion are slightly toxic and enlarge your pupils so you can see better in the dark.
No magic, science!

Longsword more fun, more combos available, more fun for 1v1 duel
Shortsword better for minmaxing murderhobo, because with all the 1H buff perks shortsword ends up way more efficient for carving through large numbers quickly. those 1H perks also extend to the 1h maces, warhammers and axes as well, so this goes even for heavy armour opponents. Longsword is for duelling, shortsword is for battle.

One handed sword is better because you can adjust for master strike much quicker.
Master strike is EVERYTHING
Mace is a good early weapon but I eventually transition to longsword. The reach is good. Haven't tried polearms yet. Crossbow is good.

the Balif mace was god tier in kcd1, it's good for people who don't like the sword play. Just bash your way through combat. The polearm was insta death for anyone but you couldn't store it. Not sure how it is in this game now it's stowable
