Considering all the one handed buff 10% damage perks right now. SS do more damage than longswords.
Just on stats? Longswords (2h) are the best stat weapons.
1h are mostly faster, can be paired with a Shield (2h only with a perk and a hefty 20% dmg reduce, higher stam cost etc.).
So... pick your weapon. Try both.
that being said, in theory there is a perk on the strength tree that actually enables you to use your two handed longswords with one hand and still use a shield or torch, but it comes with the downside of slower hits and more stamina need.
Also, like mentioned above, one hand swords have few few really good perks themselfes and that makes them at least equal or even better and hunting swords have also a good blunt damage on them, which is why I take them in this game.
Also longswords are two handed so it is only sword category that cannot use shields or a torch without investing extra perk (and having debuff with the perk).
I dont use shields becuase it blocks too much vision for my taste but it is solid protection if you struggle in harder fights. The torch however, fighting in darkness sucks beucase enemies are not affected yet you are so torch is a must. (or a potion tho I still dont understand why we have literally witcher cat potion to see in the dark)
i realy dont want to carry the heavy shilds with me ^^
2H swords are still good if you don't have perks (they're in a different skill tree) or for easy mode with poisons (one shot almost all enemies). They are also good for master strikes, so you can do more damage with each master strike.
The the ingredients in this potion are slightly toxic and enlarge your pupils so you can see better in the dark.
No magic, science!
Longsword more fun, more combos available, more fun for 1v1 duel
Shortsword better for minmaxing murderhobo, because with all the 1H buff perks shortsword ends up way more efficient for carving through large numbers quickly. those 1H perks also extend to the 1h maces, warhammers and axes as well, so this goes even for heavy armour opponents. Longsword is for duelling, shortsword is for battle.
Master strike is EVERYTHING
