EDIT:
Reloaded it.. and instead of walking in the front gate and confronting him... I went around he back where he was working a saw.. interacted drew him out for the duel and killed him. This time WITHOUT the massive reputation loss? Dunno.
can confirm, the reputation loss happens even without this perk. sigh. can't complain though. this is the first serious bug I encountered in almost 70h and it hasn't even been a month since the release.
Also, I had the reputation drop even before dueling handsome charles. I got the reputation hit when I back stabbed a group of randomly spawned bandits on the road near the charcoal burner camp. Very strange.
But as odd symbols nick previous player said, indulgence chests are not there as cosmetics. Use them. Or talk to any priest to gain more rep overall from "pilgrimage".
Here's how it played out fo me.
I really wanted to defeat him in a duel, instead of simply assassinating him. So, I lured him just outside the fence by throwing rocks (had to be careful not to attract anyone else).
At this point I was going to reveal myself to him and try to lead him away from the camp. To may surprise, he took an issue with my horse standing nearby and tried to shoo her away. Good old Pebbles lead him away from his gang and to the edge of the "private area".
There I talked to Charlie and challenged him to a duel. Just to be on the safe side, during combat I backed off a bit to lead him even further from the camp.
One Master Srike later Mr. Handsome was no more, I had his hat and my Reputation was intact.
Hopefully this will work for others as well. Sorry for the long and conoluted tale :)
The path of a rightious man is not an easy one to follow :)
Had a real blast doing the no-kill run in KCD1 for instance - I mean that's impossible in KCD2 but there's a certain aspect in the game where you'd rather not commit any crimes.
When the hardcore mode finally arrives I'll probably have a more relaxed playthrough.
