Thievery system is broken
Visited the shop during the day, accidentally walked past the counter triggering "you need to leave now" warning. Robbed and emptied the shop at night without witness. Now I have over 10k fines with the guard citing someone witnessed that I was lingering around and items went missing..... and that is enough to justify the arrest. Tried speech check several times but I think the amount is too high to pass the speech check.

Is there anything I could do? I dont want to reload the save because I completed several quests that very same night and only to receive this theft arrest in the next morning.

Not bug nor broken. You were alone trespassong, guard of course know who did it.

The only way to avoid it is to not enter the place for cca a week, then they will forget. There is a perk so they forget sooner, or another one to mostly ignore you.

I noticed a pause menu tip explicitly saying people aren't stupid and if things go missing with you around, you might be blamed.
Leaving the area and not returning for a while makes crimes go away, but it takes some time. Probably also scales with amount.

You were seen acting strangely & then later on things were stolen. That's enough for suspicion to land on you.

You were seen hanging around where you shouldn't be, the day before the place was robbed.
I came here to ask about the "suspect" status but glad other people are discussing it.

I've been wondering, does anyone know how long it takes for the "suspect" status to drop? When you actually commit a crime and are seen there is an icon and you can check when it's safe to go back but with as a "suspect" it all happens internally and there's no way to know when you're able to safely attempt a crime again.

It's most likely a much shorter time than a crime but do we know an exact value?

the system is still broken, tried so hard killing a bandit near town..... then saw someone running away screaming murder..... this brings back so much RDR memory.

LOL, in a dialog, a guy picked a fight with me. I actually chose the non-violent reaction, but he forced his way into a fist fight. I kicked his butt, and when he surrendered, I told him to go away. I didn't even take his money. He ran right to the guards and they tried to fine me for assault.

It's entirely possible there's bugs, but I haven't had this happen to me. Did you start combat? If so might be why you're considered the criminal. Just cause they're labelled as a bandit, doesn't necessarily mean they're fair game to murder in front of people if they're not doing anything wrong.

yeah, I had pleasant conversations with people labeled as a bandit. Which is just stupid. Give them a name if they are intended to be middle of the fence. Generic "bandit" tells me free to kill on sight.

meh, there's hundreds of people called 'villager' or 'hired hand' etc. I understand why there's limits. I can see why someone would think it's fine to just attack them, but I guess it's not too painful a lesson to learn.

Just practice Chinese driving - make sure to reverse back over them so they stay dead if you get into an accident.

Honestly sounds like one of the most realistic things in the game lol.

Yeah I’ve encountered guards being basically omnipotent before. I get that people will be suspicious if I’m spotted trespassing and stuff ends up missing from the area later, but that shouldn’t apply if I was spotted on the other side of town because one of the shops is buggy about what areas you’re allowed to walk in.

I’ve also had a quest (the one with the sword master dispute) fail because of my criminal activity. If I committed any kind of crime at all after accepting the quest, even if I was never caught and never wanted, it auto-failed the quest later on because of my “villainous acts”. It’s one of my favorite quests in the game so far and I had to reload a save from hours earlier just to do it properly.

I agree with the poster, thievery is pretty much broken in KCD2. it's not even worth it because they always notice something and you around then you are wanted. If they wanted people to stop stealing, just remove it from the game, but it's redesign is overly punishing. Maybe add a mechanic i can frame somebody else by dropping some of another persons property nearby, or maybe the idea i can change outfits or have a visor on so i can't be identified. As for i am noticed, these medieval towns have no outside visitors? Is Henry the only stranger in the town? Give me a break for lazy, poorly implemented mechanics.
My only real issue is the buggy trespassing. You're meant to be able to open an unlocked door, walk into an area, see its trespassing and quickly duck out within a few seconds without punishment. That is not always the case.

In the first game Red trespassing areas were either mostly behind a blue private area so you knew what you were getting into, or it was in an enemies camp or something where it should be blatantly obvious.

As it stands you walk up to a tavern, or house where you've got a quest and take the wrong door and you get some idiot run up and ask for a 25 groschen fine. Ridiculous.
