How to forge an axe?
I play on PC, I encountered a problem when forging an axe - I don't understand how to hit it correctly. Is there a correct sequence and should I hit only the blade, or the butt too?
I have no problems with forging swords, I create level 4 swords without any problems.

Axes are easier than swords for me, i just make sure i dont hit the same place twice, just hit right next to your last hit and move up and down about 2 times then flip the piece over and repeat, also i only hit the piece when it is the colour of straw, once it cools it become more red and i stop to go heat it up again, it needs to make a loud ping noise and lots of sparks then you know it is a good hit

It's the same as any sword. You hit it for sparks to come out and try different spots on every strike.I strike once and change spots all the time and i make tier 4,even axes.
I just make tiny adjustments and try to keep sparks going. You might need to reheat once but its not too much of a chore

Do you choose places randomly or with some order?
I've been just hammering along the cutting edge with good timing and small changes in position, and I've been getting tier 3 every time. You definitly don't need to hammer anywhere else for that.

(I don't know about getting tier 4 with the perk, yet)
Henry's perk is only for the swords. There is a unique axe you can forge/restore to Tier4.
Huh, I must have misread it. I thought that would apply to any weapon you forge. (I haven't tried yet, since the gear I have is better than the diagrams I can find/afford *I think*.)
Tier 4 simple long sword (2H) is the best so far compared to any drops for me (map 1). There is also a quest saber, which is 1-H but has similar stats. you can steal it back (according to internet), i didn't bother. I use 2H sword and a poleaxe for funzies.
Should hammer anywhere it's heated.

Move the piece only when your hammer is down, so you get an idea of where the blow will land, and each new hit should preferably be in a new position adjacent to the last. Easy enough to run it on a line across the blade, then move a row back from the blade, and repeat the process, on both sides.

Does the blade need to take 3 hits or is 2 enough?

So, thanks to everyone who answered the call for help. Today I started forging again and everything worked out. Maybe there was some bug because of which my forging constantly broke, as if every blow was wrong. Today I did the same thing and everything went well. Once again - thanks to everyone for the help)
