Make sure to use rocks to distract guards so you can get up there. I think its only one guard, so its easy.
That or you can talk to a praying guy to the right from the upper area entrance. He will want you to get some medal thing or something since its lost. The priest has it by the training court yard. You can pick pocket, knock him out, or gamble. I think you need 20 or 25 bucks to gamble it. But if you win, youll get the thingy. Go back to the guy praying, and he will then let you see thomas if you follow him.
After that. What I did, was just go to the right "tower' of the castle (to the right of the entrance of the upper area). Sneak nearly to the top, its like the 2nd or 3rd floor from the top. There is a single guard thatll walk around from the 2nd floor to near the top. Just listen, and throw a rock if needed. There is also some other guy who walks around sometimes.
But near the top theres an potion station. On the shelf to your left when you get there. There is a book, on how to make the potion for thomas. Take it and read it, then theres a chest in there too. Open it and youll have all the stuff you need to make it. OBviously make it.
(idr if you need lock picks if you need lock picks, theres a dude you can buy a few from, by the stables).
After that youre good to go. You can do it with in 8 bell rings, likely 4 or 5.
pretty sure as long as you get access to the upper area, and have some lock picks (or I think knock a civilian out in the castle that has the book on how to make the potion to cure thomas. You can get a key to unlock most stuff in that castle).
You can just do all that, with out helping people with a quest. And just sneak your way through. Theres a literal like dozen ways to do this quest lol.
For all of you who could not intuitively solve this quest correctly, here is a guide (eng):

But after 3 hours of bashing my face into my keyboard on this mission, I made the potion and the freakin' still is greyed out even after quitting and restarting.
It's bugged and my will to live it destroyed. Best game ever for an entire day and now I've just suffered one of the worst RPG missions of my life.
I'll try again another day.
1. From Henry's room, go straight, veer slightly left, and head up the stairs into the kitchen.
2. Walk to the end of the kitchen until you see a guard. Save and exit the game.
3. Walk up the stairs. If you get caught by the guard, reload the game.
4. Continue up two more floors. There should be a door immediately to your left—enter the room.
5. Inside, you'll find a scribe. Save the game.
6. Knock him out or kill him. (If your stealth skill is too low, he will escape, so the safest option is to attack and kill him.)
7. Take his keys and search the chests for the fever potion.
8. Save-scum your way back to your room, sleep, and save.
9. Find a tutorial on how to reach the top of the tower to deliver the potion to Captain Thomas. Sneak your way up, saving and exiting frequently to avoid losing progress if you're discovered by guards.
this is the exact instructions i wrote above, except he's running past the guards instead of sneaking.
Your instructions were lacking (lookup a tutorial to get to the top of the tower? really?), confusing, and inefficient. The video is better.
Perfect logic. You're advocating a video walk-through while dismissing it when I suggest it.
It works fine. As you pointed out by saying you became "incredibly frustrated" to the point you about "gave up", it's definitely a skill issue. Get gud.
6 is hardly chivalrous lol
You don't have to do all that, just take herbs from the kitchen chest with the ginger while helping the cook, and craft potions at the alchemy table in the room where you find Katherine
Or go to the other room opposite (as Katherine tells you if you ask where you can find some) and lockpick a chest with potions, but it's a pretty hard lock iirc
