Anyone tried Shooting the Legate? What happens If you kill the horse?

This isn't a criticism of you, your opinion is perfectly valid - but this opinion is why you can be in the late game of an rpg, stealthing through the emperor's palace to find the gizmo that gives him his evil power, and the most secure vault in the kingdom is... a very easy lockpick attempt - because heaven forbid we exclude players who didn't level up their lockpicking skill!

Try emptying extra weight from the horse inventory, even if it isn't at max it seems to slow the horse speed if you have high inventory weight usage.

You can complete it with any of the two free horses - if they have their perk active.
In other words, if you didn't rush through the main story, but you rode them alot, they got the perk and it buffed their speed.
If you ignored side content, then sorry, your horse is too slow, you will now have to go buy another horse.

Not only this is not piss poor design, this is an ingenious reminder that RPGs are not Candy Crush Saga and have tons of different content to explore.

This is an absolutely stupid take. This is objectively bad quest design. Locking people out of doing the main quest, and forcing them to reload, or cheat to progress IS bad quest design.
And your take on it being to "Reinforce doing side content" is even more stupid. I've been doing a lot of side content, but have a bad horse because he is PRETTY! I am playing an RPG, and want a pretty horse. Not either of the free nags to get a perk for stats. I never cared he was slow as ♥♥♥♥, because he is a pretty white horse.

KCD2 has terrible quest design, and that is an objective fact. I love the game, it has a lot of good things to it, but it is undeniably buggy, and has some very questionable quest design.
I finished nearly every quest so far and only this one has a questionable quest design. So no, it is not an objective fact. Maybe you can say that about this specific quest but the quests in general? I disagree.

Goes immediately into the cutscene if you shoot the horse. Had to redo it because it counted against Lent achievement.

If you have head start 2, you should be able to be really close to the legate for the first 10 seconds, which should be enough for you to load your crossbow and shoot the horse or guy. If you have a super fast horse with head start 2, you can literally catch up to the legate and finish that chase in like 3 seconds.

Cann't complete it, because my horse don't want sprint. Sprint works only with *take road* in this quest. Just imposible, tried everything, even gamepad control. Totaly ♥♥♥♥.
I just don’t understand why I am being punished for having a warhorse kitted out like a warhorse when the game gives me perks for a warhorse and now I have to give that up to catch someone in a main quest.
Upgraded Pebbles (loaded to the max with pieces of armors too expensive for anyone to buy :D) and head start 2. It was enough to stay close enough until the cutscene (I stayed on the road, did not follow the legate when he wanders off track)
Just shoot the legates horse with poisoned bolt.....use a crossbow.
my issue is the sprint button literally doesnt work but just in this scenario...

edit: 5th time through i realized it had taken all the equipment off my horse...another glitch i guess? immediately when the catch part starts, re-gear and it was easy.
