How the ♥♥♥♥ does horse sprint work

I cant get my horse to ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ run. and of course there is a mission where it has to chase someone and i can't get it to ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ run. God why the hell did they have to change this

Im pretty sure you just press shift once and I think you have to have the gears thingies on your boots

Press shift to speed up to a trot, then press shift again to speed up to a gallop. You'll notice there's a yellow bar underneath the horse's stamina bar. You need to keep that yellow bar from draining for your horse to continue galloping, so you need to periodically hit shift to keep it going.

It's way more complicated than it was in the first game, and I don't understand why they did it. It's even worse on controller since you need to keep pressing L3/LS, which is a one-way ticket to stick drift.
