Lock picking
This is absolutely one of the worst mechanics and most frustrating mechanics ever. Is there a way to get better at this or a way to hack around this?

There was a mod that came out to auto pick looks in KCD1 so I'd imagine since it is the same engine that there will be a mod for this one as well if there already isn't. For what it is worth the lockpicking in KCD2 is much better than in the first one.

As with everything in this game, the more you practice and level the skills, the easier it'll get. You need to start with very easy, then do easy, then medium and so on. You can't just pick a medium or hard lock with low skills.

It is part Henry's skills and part your skill. As henry levels up thievery it gets much easier to do your part of the job

i totally agree that this is the worst and frustrating mechanics that has ever been designed in a video game. i am not able to pick any "middle level" lock. it kills the fun of this game like nothing else. it is really disappointing. :(
It's a very well designed and implemented mechanic and the solution is for you and Henry to 'GIT GUD' nothing more to say.

Have you practised on the chest at miller Kreyzl's place? That's the first step. Then pick 'very easy' and 'easy' locks to improve Henry's 'thievery' level. You can also get some 'quickfinger' potion, that will help you pick locks above your level by increasing your thievery skill.
The more you practice, the better Henry gets at it.

Best practice is to find a spot you can manage whether that's top, bottom, center, outer of left, right, up, or down. Henry gets tired and eventually breaks the pick you can tell how close you are by the way it gets worse in circles.
To save the pick and reset where the location is just exit out after giving it a chance. If you find its finally in a sweet spot you can manage then break a few picks to get it open. After you get a rhythm down of how you are able to succeed then the mini game becomes trivial.
I personally for some reason can not get any chest Hard and up at the bottom right. Wild but just my personal kryptonite.

Keep playing, the early lockpicking stuff has like -100 impact.

You'll get to train and properly learn it later on.

Simply practise
I now open everything with a lock pick.
It should also be difficult at the beginning because once you are a master you have money in abundance and that shouldn't be the case at the beginning.

Had a recent discussion about this with 2 friends and 1 was like - "tell him how you do it with a controller" and I was like "no ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ clue , I switch to KBM for that"

I really have no idea how people manage the lockpicking with a controller :D - I personally just can't....

Anyway - cheers - let's drink to that ;)

I also play on the PC with my XBox Elite 2 controller and I now open every lock with a lock pick and I've also tried it with the mouse and I couldn't manage it at all.
I also play almost exclusively with the controller on the PC.
