combos are only viable to use when your enemy is drained of stamina, so after trading blocks & ripostes & you have to learn to read when your enemy is fatigued while still having stamina yourself. It's easier to just use masterstrokes with a sword when you learn them, but eventually you'll be coming across enemies very resistant to swords with all their armour & will even tank a bunch of hits from a good mace. At that point you may actually start getting off combos more often, but they're still one of the hardest combat techniques to use.
You can set up combos, mostly chaining them from master strikes. The problem is that you're locked into the animation, which can end badly if you're attacked from multiple sides, you’ll get staggered and likely die.
Being opportunistic works wonders. Stabby stab + Bane gets the job done, no combos required.
If you really insist on learning combos, there are multiple trainers and duel offers where you can practice until you’ve mastered them.
The simplest one is left-right-left. You can chain it off a master strike when your weapon gets deflected to the side.
That said, combos will be interrupted if the enemy executes a master strike against you.
Personally, I prefer stabbing, feints, or ripostes, anything that lets me focus on my enemy's position so I can adjust accordingly.
It also could be related to how well the long-sword staggers i've noticed, so i could be wrong when it comes to other weapons, but just generally don't give them time to act, and most of the time waiting to block will just put you in a negative situation just always be the person striking IMO. I'm not saying don't block but try to be more aggressive.
